Draft at Mellow Mushroom Tampa. Pours brown with an off-white head. Nose is malt, nuttiness, some hops, and more malt that entices one further into its realm. Flavor is lots of nuts mixed in with malt, maybe cocoa, and wood. Balanced, enjoyable, and can hold its own against the big boys. Only weakness is that it was better on cask at OTH.

32 oz growler acquired via trade with fishingnet. Thanks, Ben! Pours a nice dark brown with reddish notes, dark and fiery, small offwhite head, largely transparent aside from the darkness. Aromas are chocolatey, nice brown sugar, smokiness, nut, and tobacco mix. Light, yet sufficient. A touch of vanilla and maltiness. Initial is a medium body, pushing brown sugar, earthiness, tobacco, some nut, brown toasty and roast, very light vanilla. Caramel, smokiness (But not BBQ, more wood and a touch of ash, tobacco). Takes on a bit of a stronger flavor further in. This is a very nice brown ale, aided by good solid, assertive flavors. Fairly underbodied. Cheers.

Growler courtesy of tpd975 shared at the Brick Store. Pours a dark mahogany with a small off-white head that recedes fairly quickly and leaves little lacing. The aroma is really big on this one with tons of caramel malts and nuts. There is a faint hop aroma in the nose and also a good bit of tobacco and chocolate. Big aroma for the style. The taste follows the aroma with the dominant caramel malt sweetness with lots earthy notes, nuts and tobacco especially come out. Again, only a faint hint of hops leading a fairly dry finish. The mouthfeel is really smooth with help from the oatmeal and is on the fuller side of things as the style goes. Good carbonation. This is one of the biggest brown ales I’ve tasted and the flavor profile is very robust compared to others in the style. I really liked this one.

Crushed with Honkeybra at GABF. Can stand on its own without the cigar. Pretty badass and smooth brown. Very subtle, maybe a little too easy to drink.

Tap at Capone’s. Pours out a light brown/amber color with a nice tan head. Aroma is of sweet chocolate, some roast and coffee. Rich, smooth and silky on the palate, chocolate, oat, roast, deep earthy notes, some nut and maybe its just the name, but I’d swear I get a touch of some tobacco. Top notch beer of a style that is usually just meh for me.

9/29/09 notes: GABF session two. Aroma is delectably nutty and toasty, much more interesting than Double Nut, ironically. Palate is smooth, medium in fullness and lightly carbonated. Flavor displayes toasted malt and nuts upfront, layered with dried fruit and dry chocolate in the middle. Really quite good for a brown, and perhaps the first Cigar City beer that I’ve really liked.
