FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Austin, Texas USA -June 15, 2004

RateBeer.com is pleased to announce the results of its fifth semi-annual world beer competition, RateBeer Best Summer 2004, the largest beer competition in the world. The world's top brewer award goes to Alesmith Brewing in San Diego, California. Despite being a small craft brewery with limited distribution, Alesmith has created some of the greatest releases of the last year. Alesmith also produced the top beer in world, Alesmith Barrel Aged Speedway Stout which is a hefty 12% ABV, coffee-laced brew.

A few highlights...

  • Imperial stouts dominated the top beers list, taking 8 of the top 15 spots
  • Beers from ten different countries were honored on the top beers list -- including Poland, Scotland, Denmark and Finland
  • Beer hotbed, San Diego, earned a remarkable three of the top ten brewer spots in the world
  • Three Belgian Trappist ales made the top 25

A complete list of winners is available below...

RateBeer Best was once again the world's largest beer competition -- over 30,000 different beers from over 4000 brewers in 120 different countries are listed in our database and were eligible for awards. More than 128,000 ratings, all submitted during the last nine months, were tabulated to create the top beers list. Our total ratings archive of over 1/3 million were used to tabulate the top brewer list, however special emphasis was placed on brewer performance over the last 9 months.

The judging was done by thousands of ordinary beer enthusiasts from 65 countries around the world with America's beers being most rated. Several of the world's most avid amateur beer enthusiasts participated in the contest including Per Samuelsson (Sweden), Josh Oakes (Canada), Philippe Corbat(Switzerland), Scott Johnson (New York, USA) and Aaron Goldschmidt (Washington D.C., USA). Each of these members has over 2,000 documented beer ratings while the top rater has over 4,000. Because of their amateur status there are no minced words in the reviews -- beers were rated frankly and freely.

Congratulations to all those recognized for their tremendous achievements in craft brewing.
