3.8 Black Bottle Tripel Bottle - labeled 9.2 abv - moderately hazy gold - fairly impressive for an American rendition - not overly sweet, and without the clove and other crap you sometimes get in messier versions of the style - medium dry mineral through the middle - moderate spicy phenolics and lightly floral hops before a peppery finish - slight honey sweetness returns at the end. 3.1 Black Bottle Tropical Depression 12oz bottle from Mulberry Max in Fort Collins. No bottle date. Amber fairly clear pour with an off-white head. Aroma has coconuts, sweet malts, and stone fruits. Taste is of sweet malts, stone fruits, some citrus, and raw coconut. The meld in the aroma is offsetting, but in the taste it is a bit better. Quite sweet. The coconut is an interesting player, but the rest of this is mostly a mess. Could certainly be old. Finishes sweetly. Shrug? 12.4 Wednesday, September 4, 2019

2.6 Black Bottle There Goes The Neighborhood Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is light amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted grain/seeds), lightly to moderately yeasty (basement), with notes of grains of paradise, clove, pepper, alcohol, bubble gum. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Ok aroma, but smells overspiced (even if they didn't add spices, it sure seems so, nearly overwhelming with peppery-clovey sorts of phenols). Wayyyy too sweet in the mouth, and way too boozy/hot, so certainly not a saison and not fun to drink. Could be worse, I guess, but really off the mark and hard to enjoy regardless of what you call it. Saturday, August 31, 2019
