Black beer, solid tan head. Smells sweet and boozy with some maltiness in there. Flavour has a good whack of the port barrel. Sweet and boozy with a notable woodiness. Dried fruit in here with chocolate, some coffee , a hint of smoke, some malt, good toasty malt. This is like an old ale on turbo and I love the balance of the smooth rich body and the earthy, fruity notes. Big, rich and boozy.

Bottle via a trade I think. Pours a bit lively. Sits nearly black. Very decent tan foam. Nose has port dregs. Bit of manure. Treacle. Ashy malt. Taste is quite sweet with a vinous dry twang. Smooth overall. Fine brisk carbonation. Twangy finish. That manure thing isn’t great.

330ml panda from LCB. Pours thick black with tanned head. Powerful aroma of the aged oak and particularly maderia hit first, then notes of chocolate, mixed dark fruits, roasted malt, touch of liquorice. Taste of dark chocolate, raisins, port, oak, toffee. Its boozy and sweet but not overdone or too rich. Creamy mouthfeel with a fine to average carbonation. Long bitterness in the finish. Well balanced.

Bottle bought at Cotteridge Wines. Aroma has dark fruit, malts, and a fruit vinegar sour streak. Opaque glossy dark brown. Thin foamy off-white head retreats to the rim. Rich. Dark fruit. Boozy bite. Followed by a wave of molasses. Heavy bodied. Oily. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long slightly astringent finish. Slips down.

Aroma is boozy, woody, toffee, toasted, roasted malt, camp coffee, charcoal, ash, touch of port wine and plastic. Quite sweet with light to moderate roasted bitterness. Medium to full body, slick, soft to flat carbonation. Good, but for me not quite up to previous versions.

Bottle. Pours fairly thick, dark brown head. Nose is intense, slick, sweet, desserty, chocolate, red fruits, when you know its Madeira, it definitely is. Mouthfeel continues intense and slick, dark chocolate pudding, red dessert wine is there quite heavily when you know it, gentle roast, thick, sweet. Definitely a dessert and not a gentle and subtle brew but still doesnt feel too much over - it is heavyweight though. I’ve mostly lost my old love for pastry stouts but this tastes great again.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up online. Pours rich brown with a small, creamy khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with sturdy ashy roast, tangy berries, earth, tobacco, raisins, booze, old barrel wood. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, has a little acidity that cuts through the dark beer character nicely, some further berry notes, old leather, modest earthy bitterness, background ashy dryness. Good stuff.

On tap at Ebenezers, Nantwich. Pours almost black with no head. Aroma is a vague hint of chocolate. In the mouth it is smooth and silky.
