Backlog, from notes. On tap @ the brewpub, 11 May 2001. Copper colored. Aroma’s: malts, caramel. Flavor is moderate sweet, malty, with an staring bitterness. Body is light to medium. Moderate bitter finish. Good, but I liked the Centenniale I had afterwards better (but I can’t add it anymore...)

Callahan's Red
A: A light amber colored pour with a nice fluffy off-white head to it. S: The aroma is primarily of toasted bread and sweet caramel, but there is a distinct off-note that I’ve noticed in several other red ales. T: This one opens up with a caramel sweetness along with toasted bread and biscuity malts. There is a touch of floral hops and a mild bitterness. M: Thin-medium in body with a tingly carbonation. D: This was much maltier than I prefer in a red/amber ale, but still passable.

Callahan's Shamrock Gold
A: This is one of the paler beers I’ve come across in quite some time. The most feeble of yellow hues keep this one from being clear. S: The nose is similarly lifeless, offering not much more than a touch of sweet grain/malt. T: To my surprise, there actually was a flavor to the beer! Though it mostly consists of sweet malts, there is a touch of bitterness and perhaps some floral hops. M: As you might expect, the body is light and the carbonation is plentiful. But, it’s somewhat necessary for this beer. D: One of those beers that’s made for the Bud Light crowd. I can see how this is a choice for some, but I’d prefer a beer with a bit more going on.

Callahan's Nameless Nut Brown
A: The pour is an almost amber brown color with a fairly minimal off-white head. S: There is a fair bit of nuttiness and perhaps a bit of chocolate to the nose. There are some toasty malts and caramel sweetness as well. T: The nuttiness and chocolate flavors are present as you might expect. Unfortunately, there is an almost chalky bitterness (aspirin?) to the beer that really ruins it. M: The body is a bit on the light side with the aforementioned chalkiness and a moderate carbonation. D: Not one of the better offerings from Callahan’s. There are certainly better brown ales available, so I would suggest going with something else.

Callahan's Mesa Pale Ale
A: The pour is a pale golden color with some hints of orange and a white head on top. S: The amount of grapefruit and citrus in the nose is quite surprising--in a good way. A touch of bready malt and a bit of sugar as well. T: Unfortunately, the flavors don’t quite live up to the expectations of the nose. A bit on the bready side with some faint grapefruit and orange hops. M: Medium in body, but perhaps a touch watered down. The carbonation also isn’t as aggressive as I usually like in a pale ale. D: For what it is, not a bad beer. I would have liked the hoppiness to translate to the flavor a bit better, but a decent enough pale ale.

Callahan's India Pale Ale
Draft at brewpub before my first QUAFF meeting. Woohoo! Amber color. Nice small bubble head. Middle of road sweetness. Very nicely done grapefruit hop bitterness. I think this beer is underrated, for whatever reason. Even I dropped it 0.1-0.2 to fit closer to the current ratings.

Calling this beer a brown ale did not seem apropriate to me. The appearance and taste were more like a porter. Very dark brown to black with strong taste and smell of chocolate. There were some nutty and caramel flavors but chocolate was most dominate. Still, pretty tasty.

This beer was so unpleasant I had to send it back. The diacetyl levels made this beer taste like a stick of butter. The only use for this would be on top of popcorn or maybe toast.
