Heavy Seas Blackbeard's Breakfast
Bottle to snifter, shared with the Mrs (2024 vintage). Pours a very slightly translucent very dark cola with beige head that slowly but steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells and tastes malty with notes of chocolate, coffee, roast, oak, and caramel. Mouthfeel is medium full-bodied, very mildly warming, and moderately bitter. Good, not great. Solid for the price though.

Heavy Seas Double Cannon - Bourbon Barrel Aged
Panda at home, thanks to SHIG, 17/04/24. Golden amber with an off white cap that clears to a swirl. Nose is mellow bourbon, bitter orange, grapefruit peeping through the barrel, caramel malts. Taste comprises caramel malts, candied orange peel, pine nip, earthy hop, well integrated bourbon, sharp citric bite, bourbon soaked oak. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close splashed with bourbon and mellow hop bitterness allied to a balanced spike of alcohol. Works well ... I'd have styled as American Strong on a blind taste for sure!

Heavy Seas TropiCannon - Mango Lime
First let me say that I am the wrong ratebeerian to rate this beer for style. Back in 2004 when I started following RB, all my RB peers said my pallet would mature to IPA; well, it didn't. I guess I'll never grow up to a be a RB adult, I'll always be a RB kiddoh. But just because its beer, I'll somewhat like it after a hard day of yardwork hauling around and leveling garden soil; especially because it will provide a near 8% dopamine slam. Any who, this beer pours a darker off pale and slightly hazy. Very nice creamy holding head. The nose is certainly fruity, difficult to pick out any IPA hops on the nose. Not sure if I find any lime in the olfactory either. First taste is what else? A big fat hoppy bitter slam in the face, with an after taste that provides a small amount of phenolic astringent bite, blah. Terribly on style. Now there is this warming sensation easing its way down my throat. In the middle, I think I am getting some fruit but to say its lime or mango is a stretch. Its so one sided with the hops, like any good IPA should. Rude ass brew that is quite difficult for my girlie lager loven taste buds to endure, whew. The finish? It's mouthcoating and somewhat viscous. What else can be said except it ruined my taste buds for a half hour? There, you have it. Somebody please get me a clean clear ice cold cheap pale lager for a chaser.

Medium white head and I've never seen a head die off that fast!! I mean like five seconds or less! Murky cider appearance. Mild nose, mango and tart berries. Light body with no real carbonation to speak of, fairly tart. I can't even rouse a head on this stuff! Mild berry, slight malts and maybe some watermelon notes. I guess the attraction is the fleeting tart/sourness?? Dry, tart finish. Another discombobulated brew from our friends at,,,, Heavy Seas. Glad I only bought a single, had a feeling. 12oz can from statelineliquors.

Draft at brewery. Old-school spices on a slightly stick body. Rook me for a loop, a blast from the past. I get some cherry coming through, which is probably from the strong alcohol. I would’ve loved it in the past and it’s actually very drinkable but definitely spice bomb. I’m into the old-school vibe but it makes sense why we don’t see this much anymore.

Pours clear caramel with a short-lived beige head. Aroma produces tart blackberries, zesty mango, hints of stonefruit and herbs. Flavor releases the same, only stronger. Texture generates nice body and peppy leaning towards lively fizz. Did you hear about the midnight diver?

Heavy Seas Impending Doom Sub Zero
Draft at brewery. I though someone lite up as I first sniffed this beer. Damn, they got the sticky green aroma down. Also surprisingly, as sloth mentions, relativity light and drinkable body for a beer this big. Low sweetness for this size. A really bitter hop finish to also help fight the alcohol and potential sweetness perception. If I wanted a sticky ichy smell in a strong abv with a relatively unsweet and bitter beer, this is a hit. Though, I’m unsure how often I want that. A little extra props for hitting this tough spot.

Heavy Seas 28th Anniversary Ale - Bourbon Barrel
Draft at the source. Oh man, why would this taste like apple brandy. Lots of Belgian seeetness and malts, thick feel. But surprisingly goes down easier than expected down the gullet. More weird barrel rather than alcohol being over the top. Look, for a beer this big and barrel the expectations are low and this may be just a hint above those expectations. Maybe.

Heavy Seas TropiCannon
Can. Moderate caramel for the malt, herbs for hops, light soap for the yeast, with lots of citrus juice and peefume in the background. Head is average sized, frothy/creamy, with good lacing, and is mostly lasting. Color is slightly hazy orange amber. Flavor starts lightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, slick, with a lively carbonation. An okay drinking beer, and Heavy Seas makes some good IPAs but this flavored version is too artificial tasting for me.

Heavy Seas TropiCannon - Strawberry Banana
Super clear, but deep golden and light copper coloured body with a thinnish, but noticeable one centimetre tall tan head that leaves a thin lace on top after a few minutes. Aroma of very strong strawberries and bananas - just like a smoothie - very strong in the nose. Light to Medium-bodied; Super pungent and offensive, bitter and strong hops and aggressive, bitter hops show up front with a lot of alcohol and deep bitterness from the pervasive fruits, which are very strong and perhaps too bitter. Aftertaste shows the bitterness and pure astringent alcohol notes way more than anything else - a lot stronger in the finish than I was expecting - this one was very hard to get down! Overall, not such a great beer, especially for how pungent and deep/assertive this was with limited fruit notes - not so enjoyable and a bit too funky! I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Wegman's [grocery] in Fairfax, Virginia on 18-September-2022 for US$2,33 (part of a mixed six pack), best by 06-December-2022 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 05-October-2022.

Heavy Seas TropiCannon - Mango Lime
Super crisp and very clear deep copper and light brown coloured body with a deep amber glow, all with a pretty nice two centimetre tall large-bubbled light brown and tan head. Aroma of super strong and bitter lime and mango notes with a ton of dryness and grassy notes, but the bitterness from the alpha acids are strong. Medium-bodied; Very crisp and bitter dry and grassy, herbal malts show at first with a bunch of perfumey notes, but the alpha acid bitterness and punch from this is very strong, especially on the end. Aftertaste is dry, very limey, with a lot of citrus notes, but also some crisp mangoes as well, with a rather strong malt quality that has a lot of pungency, but enough to support the hop bitterness of the alpha acids and the citrus fruits. Overall, a strong and older school IPA, with real bitterness, although more of it is seemingly from the limes and mangoes than from the hops, but this is nicely balanced and structured well. Nice to try, soon after purchase and local - not a bad beer at all - interesting! I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Wegman's [grocery] in Fairfax, Virginia on 18-September-2022 for US$2,33 (part of a mixed six pack) with a 'Best By' date of 28-August-2022 and sampled at my house here in Washington on 28-September-2022.

Medium sized beige head, fair retention, no lacing really. Lightly hazed copper colored brew, a few tiny bubbles slowly rising. Aromas of super glue, fruity yeast esters and semi sweet malts. Med/full bodied, little carbo, lil oily, slick. Some candy sugar notes, fruity yeasts, lightly sweet malts, bread, booze, just kinda leading nowhere really, kinda jumbled mess with a warming finish. Buzz factor is ,, good! Pretty much a one and done kinda brew. 12oz bottle.

12 oz bottle from Total Wine and More in Short Pump, VA The stout poured and opaque black with a tan head and very limited lacing. The aroma of roasted malts, cherries, and vanilla greets you. The flavors are wonderful with cherries in the aftertaste after each swallow. It's smooth and easy going down, maybe a little too sweet. The stout has a medium body and soft carbonation.

Bottle. Eye is viscous and back as pictured. Nose is mild alky volatile vanilla. Tongue is mild tart flavor on top of mouthcoating thick brutal burnt barbaric barrage. A big boozy bowser baleful balking bane. Palate's a beaten barren befouled beleaguering feeling. Middle bemoans a bereft betrayal. Finishes with a bereft bewildering betrayal of intense blameworthy blathery. Such a boorish bossy cloying alky bomb braggart. I'm brainwashingly bristly. Whew, whiskey entrails on the end. Sampler draft at brewery.I was in a hurry to drink and rate this sampler. At first I thought: old school cool for me but I probably would’ve been kind of over it back in the day but I’m OK with it now. Then, as I made my way back to it with a little time, I take it back the alcohol atop this lighter body and more flabby beer is real tough as it warms. Oh no! The alcohol is too much, rubbing alcohol is coming out and overtaking the already flabby base beer.

Sampler at brewery. Clear dark coooer color that actually changes throughout this tulip pine sampler glass. Long lasting glass covering lacing. Looks pretty damn pretty. Clean and clear light lot piney but also lightly lemon hops. So you get some of that lemon pledge. Oh no, as this warms that takes over. There seems to be a decent marzen here that’s overtaken by lemon pledge.

Heavy Seas Chocolate Volcano
Sampler draft at brewery. I stopped by to try a different beer that was only made for the brewery with a special MD hop. So, I got a sampler with 3 other beers. I was in a hurry cause I need to pick up my 6 month old baby from daycare. I worked through my sampler but I was tempted to get another one and rate them quickly. So, I get 4 more sampler pours and 3 of them are big beers. This was the first one in the paddle. Important caveat, I drink this fresh of tap (i.e., cold). Definitely chocolatey and boozy. Though a nice carbonation cutting through it and a light of body so it’s not one of those bigger heavy pastry stouts. Because its a lighter body and not wild adjuncts, it’s actually relatively drinkable. This was the rating after the quick tick: 848315. However, I come back to it because I obviously don't care about getting to my baby on time. The beer doesn't have too much of those dark malts because I could see a red hued brown body at the bottom of the sampler glass. Also has a long lasting head and lacing despite the booze and not an overabundance of hops. So, looks good. A drying black malt finish but not a burnty and acidic one. As it warms it starts remind me of their (old) regular impt stout (Peg Leg), it feels a little weak and empty at times. The adjuncts actually help a bit. But I’d want a bit more body and heft. As it warms more the rougher parts of the flavor are exposed. Tastes rocky, the wrong side of mineral.Tastes thin. Now that it is warmer that alcohol s a bit too much. Here is the final rating: 646314

Heavy Seas Altimore
Sampler at brewery. Clear dark copper color. A long lasting and thick lacing. There are two parts to this beer, the base alt and the new Maryland hop. The alt is clean and crisp with some woody clean lager yeastiness but finishes crisp and tight throughout. Some mineral characteristics and slight malt sweetness runs through the background. The hop, well it’s not bad and they used enough to get a nice decent bitter finish. It’s not fruity or noble or oily or piney. The hop is there but it’s kind of just there as a generic hop that mimics some traditional English hops best. But I like the package. Sloth, you should check this place out.

Heavy Seas Sir Dudley’s Dry Stout
Sampler at brewery. Talk about light, the beer is red hues brown at the base but darker at the bulge if this tulip like sampler pint-like glass. Seemingly clear for a dark beer. Dat Nitroh Heaead. Surprisingly bitter at the end of flavor for a small beer with little bitter hops. So a lot of burnty malt, relative to light body. Drying on the tongue, getting near mild sandpaper feel on the palate. Tastes of dark acrid husks, it’s light but light bursts out in a small beer like this. Finish gets tougher and tougher as it warms and as my palate adjusts to this beer. Aroma has some of this cocoa and faint coffee notes. I love the way drinking body but I’m turned off by the acrid and burnt flavor and finish of the beer. I typically love and give this style extra points but this is really not my kind of take on the style
