COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Speights Porter is based on a double-malt stout recipe brewed until 1929 at Speight's Brewery. A red-black beer with a rich robust palate and complex, full aromas. Best savoured at 6 degrees Celsius. A blend of crystal, caramalt, roasted wheat and choclate malt combine to give a complex, smokey, mocha aroma and a rich coffee flavour which finishes on a subtle choclate note. Kauri gyle open fermented

Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and wood as well as lighter notes of soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of mlat, caramel, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. The mouthfeel is smooth.

Smells more alcohol than the 5% listed, perhaps as an impact from the wood. The wood taste is much in the finish. The taste includes very coffee, bit of roast, minute smoke. Interesting and curious to have had, but have had more enjoyable for style. Thanks for bringing back Douglas D.

330 ml bottle. Dark brown beer with a thick tan head. Sweet malty aroma, caramel, chocolate, light coffee, with toast and bread as well. There are also notes of light molasses in the nose. Flavour is sweet and chocolately, with heavy toastiness as well. Nice sweetish finish with just a touch of smokiness as well.

Sampled on tap at the brewery. Wow! This was a surprise! Pours very dark with a dense brown head. Aromas of burnt malt, chocolate, brown bread. Rich roasty malt flavour, some chocolate, coffee, vegemite, with a slightly minerally finish. Full bodied, nice flavours.

Draft at Speight’s Alehouse in Greymouth. Pours red-black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, caramel, roast, coffee, and smoke. The flavor is roasty with a lot of chocolate and those follow through to the finish. Really smooth and full bodied, but just a wee bit watery, which keeps it from being a higher-shelf porter. Still, I liked this one a lot and it certainly beat expectations.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, medium tan head. Aroma: dark roast character, deep woody notes, clean dark malts. Medium light bodied with gentle mineral-acidic mocha, medium dark barley. Simple yet pleasant.
