| | | New Holland Brother Jacob’s Dubbel | 3.2 | nimbleprop | | | On tap at the Institute in Philly. Transparent ruby amber with a thin white head. Aroma of sticky fruits, pears, candy sugar, Belgian yeast. Flavor is malty, bready, pears, pale candy. Finish has some heat from the alcohol and some sweetness. A little too big for a dubbel. | | | | Dark Horse Sapient Trip Ale | 3.5 | nimbleprop | | | On tap at the Institute in Philly. Pours a translucent, nearly opaque orange with a thin whitehead. Aroma of yeast, bananas, cloves, tropical fruits. Flavor is better, bready, cloves, bananas, mangoes, candy sugar. Finish is slick, a little hot but OK. Pretty good tripel, not like every other one out there. | | | | Full Sail Session Black Lager | 3.7 | beerguy101 | | | Sampled on 11/6/2009. This Schwarzbier pours a medium black color from a 11oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is malt and caramel, fruity and sweet. A medium to light bodied Schwarzbier. The malts are slightly roasty and bready. The hops are mildly earthy and herbal. Nice carbonation. This reminds me of the old pre craft brew traditional “old style” dark beer. If anyone remembers the old Blitz Bavarian Dark, this beer is really close to that. Some roasty malts, a touch of cocoa and some sweetness. Not a lot of complexity, but very drinkable. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. | | | | Tyranena Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale | 3.3 | FlssmrBrewAlum | | | 12 oz bottle from the Binnys singles rack (Orland Park, IL). Glad to grab this. Pours a lightly hazed copper pour, lighter twlight edges, a moderate offwhite tannish head that sticks decent, stays a decent size surprisingly, laces ok. Aromas are suitable, caramel and toffee malts dominant, biscuit and light peat, vanilla, a nutty edge, and some ice cream waffle cone smell. Initial is medium bodied, packing on some good sweetness, caramel, toffee, vanilla, biscuits, some peat, a faint spice, a touch of waffle cone, nuts, a touch of brown sugar, a bit of candied dark fruit faintly in the backend. Light bitterness, faint even. Malt forward for sure, packing good sweeter flavors, smooth and quite drinkable. Some toastiness, but largely sweet forward, but still nice, smooth, not dominant cloying. Quite nice, really a surprising ABV. | | | | Dieu du Ciel Rigor Mortis Abt | 3.8 | Marsiblursi | | | (Bottle) Pours reddish brown with a small nougat coloured head. The aroma holds caramel, marzipan, grainy bread, chocolate and honey alongside pear, plum, tart apricot, and woody pineapple up front. Some overripe, fermented tones of orange, grapefruit, pomegranate, watermelon, grapes and vegetable. Vanilla powder, mild white pepper and spicy hops. Bit floral as well. Some alcohol warmth in the nose. The flavour is near medium sweet, light bitter and light acidic. The best thing is the malt profile - fat, caramelly and chocolaty with undertones of marzipan and honey. Spicy, fruity and warming. The mouthfeel is round, smooth and light sticky with a soft carbonation. Warming, round and malty aftertaste. Near full-bodied. Not perfect, but the malt profile and the fat body makes this beer a real treat. | | | | Rochefort Trappistes 8 | 3.5 | vikingguy | | | Pours a hazy brown, lots of sediment and carbonation. Tall foamy tan head. Aroma is caramel and dark fruit and some earthy hops. Flavor is big and rich. A caramel and raisiny sweetness intermingles with a sour and herbal-bitter tartness. Alcohol well hidden. Very good, however it has a rather unpleasant cherry cough syrup aftertaste. | | | | Dark Horse One Oatmeal Stout | 3.8 | nimbleprop | | | On tap at the Institute in Philly. Pours an opaque, oily black with a lacing, creamy tan head. Sweet aroma, brown sugar, nuts, coffee. Strong chocolate flavor with coffee, nuts, toast, burnt grains, molasses and a little smoke. Full bodied, sweet with a touch of bitterness on the end. Very nice. Even flavor while still being bold. | | | | Guinness 250 Anniversary Stout | 2.7 | cstuartj | | | Personally I can’t tell a difference between this and regular Guinness, and i’m not a big fan of either. thin, creamy... but pretty! | | | | Jolly Pumpkin Noel de Calabaza | 3.8 | Phillies2008Champs | | | Pours a cloudy dark brown with thick had tht stisck through a third of the glass. The nose presents mild sour notes but with funky earthy overtones but oak predominayes. The first sip is strong with dark brown malt but he sour picks up quickly vinous flavors also present. The finish is sour but clean, Probably one of the best American sours I have ever had.
| | | | Nodding Head Zephyr | 3.3 | nimbleprop | | | On tap at the brewery. I think altbiers are traditionally very underrated. This was very nice. Translucent copper amber with a creamy white head. Nice, biscuit, cracker, grain aroma with a hint of smoke. Flavor is more of the same, dry grains, malts, toast. Dry finish, medium bodied. We need more altbiers. | | | | River Horse Imperial Cherry Amber | 3.2 | Radek Kliber | | Bottle 355 ml
Appearance: good reddish copper with fine creamy darkly tanned top. Nose: aromatic wet leafy hops with fruity follow up , amber ale hints , hint of brown. Flavor/Palate : mid bodied wit soft substance. Neat frontal fruity leafy hop character with slight alcohol dryness. Drinkable , fairly crisp brew. Berry top end. Decent.
| | | | Sierra Nevada/Dogfish Head Life & Limb | 3.7 | cstuartj | | | Dark, murky, very smooth, no hint of the high abv. very drinkable. but just a bit sweet, i’d like a bit more bitter like a Double Bastard Ale. | | | | Nodding Head Grog | 3.4 | nimbleprop | | | Sampled on tap at the brewpub. Deep, nearly opaque brown with a creamy off white head. Sweet aroma, milk chocolate with some fruitiness that’s unexpected. Flavor is sweet, malty, bready, toast, chocolate, some fruity esters from the yeast. Dry finish. Very nice. | | | | Rogue Brutal Bitter | 3.7 | WildcatInFL | | | Bottle into a pint glass. Orange hazy with slight head. Very citrus aroma. Taste is definite citrus with very malty finish. Palate is good clean feel with no aftertaste that some bitters have given me in the past. | | | | Victory Yakima Twilight | 4.2 | LtDan | | | Appearance: Pours a dark ruby with a thick frothy beige head. Leaves tons of lacing.
Aroma: Chocolate malt, orange, grapefruit, and spicy herbal hops.
Taste: Biter citrusy hops and dark chocolate. Makes for an amazing combo.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, moderately carbonated. A tad sticky maybe.
Overall: I was really impressed with this beer. Whether it be ’An American Strong Ale’ or a Black IPA, this beer rocks. I want to take an educated guess and say drink this beer fresh due to that wonderful citrusy hop profile. | | « Back | More » |

and a nice herbal hoppy presence in the aroma. Soft hay and grains greet the tongue, followed by a touch of honeybread and earthy hops right along side it; finish is a bit on the hoppy side. Clean, crisp, but still full of flavor; both malt and hops are strong,
