News and Notes
Oakes Weekly October 7, 2003

Richmond, CANADA -

I have to ask - what Christmas party are you going to? Argo0 and Kathy are hosting their annual Christmas beer tasting, I’ve got one going, and apparently there’s going to be some sort of hootenany, whatever the hell that is, in Texas (insert shudder) as well. That weekend will also see the Pizza Port Strong Ale Fest, which will doubtless bring together the large Southern California contingent. Now, these are some of the strongest Ratebeer communities, ones that meet often. But there are other communities out there, and I for one would like to see another gathering or two that weekend. It’s about having a good time. Some forty-odd of us will be doing just that, so what will the rest of you be doing?

Early in the New Year, look for the Second Ratebeer Homebrew Competition. The first was tied to the summer party last year, which ended up being a scheduling problem. So it has been separated. So consider that a head’s up - get your brews ready now, because come late Jan/early Feb, we’ll see who’s the best. Can anyone beat the high standards set by Linc’s Foreign Stout and mwsf’s Westy clone?

Places...this is an area of focus for the coming weeks and months at Ratebeer. When the full level of functionality is up and running on this feature, we’re hoping for a full-scale blitz of places and ratings. I would just ask one thing - don’t enter a place that isn’t kick ass. It is not the goal of Ratebeer to list every bullshit paddy pub, glorified Appleby’s and cookie-cutter, English-pub-in-a-shopping mall. We want the good stuff only. When it comes to beer, we want them all, because we are the largest and by far and away the most accurate database on beer in the world (this isn’t even close, trust me). But when it comes to places, we realize that travellers only have so much time at their disposal, and locals only need so many watering holes, so please take care to give us only the good stuff.

Lastly for this week, I have added to the archives here four columns from back in the days. Three I wrote when I was writing for a website called BeerFlavour.com. This site is no longer and I searched around and have three pieces from those days (2000-early 2002). I have also added a piece from the Beer Manifesto as well. They are old, and some of the information is out-of-date, but I thought people might like to see them.
