Upon hearing the news from my boss at work that I would be
taking a trip to Washington, D.C. for a
conference, I immediately began researching beers and locales of the area to increase
both my range of beers tried as well as increase my overall rated count on Ratebeer. The
trip, although primarily business, was destined to be a big beer week for
me. On Ratebeer,
I was able to check out the Places section for D.C. by Argo0 and get a handle
on what to see and try (Capitol City, the Brickskeller and RFD made it to my list). I also leveraged Bov’s beer homepage report on his trip to the D.C. area and was able purchase some
interesting beers from Cairo Wine & Liquor. Thanks Argo0 and Bov for putting the good info
on the net. Also a great big special
thanks to my wife who took the time to seek out some amazing brews while I sat
through some very boring (and some interesting) sessions at my conference. The following report is a chronological
account of the beers consumed and the places the beers were consumed at in the Washington, D.C. area. All ratings are in Ratebeer format (Ar, Ap, Fl, Pa, Ov).

Day 1 –
Getting my ‘beerings’ on <st1:place><st1:City>Washington</st1:City>&l t;span

From the minute the plane landed at Reagan International, I
was focused on getting settled in at the hotel, getting my bearings on downtown
D.C. and finding beers to sample.
Luckily my hotel was on <st1:Street><st1:address>Pennsylvania
Avenue</st1:address></st1:Street> close to the White
House, so getting there and back during sampling sessions would not pose too
great a problem. <o:p></o:p>

The first place I hit was Capitol City Brewing (2 <st1:State><st1:place>Massachusetts</st1:place></st1:State&g t;
Avenue, NE Washington, <st1:place><st1:City>Washington</st1:City>

very welcome in the city. The menu was
very finger food / sandwich / pub grub type and matched fairly well with the
relaxed and informal beers on tap. I
was able to try all 6 beers they had on tap that day, so it was a good first
day for me. <o:p></o:p>

pleasant scent. Neither hoppy
or malty hints, but a balance of both. Finish is crisp. Slightly spicy/ floral taste. However, didn’t do much for me at this point

Day 2 –
Getting My Feet Wet<o:p></o:p>

beer tasting, I noticed a sign denoting the entrance of John Harvard’s. (<st1:address><st1:Street>1299

<st1:State>DC</st1:State> <st1:PostalCode>20004</st1:PostalCode></st1:address&g t;) I had heard of John Harvards
from random Ratebeer readings, so with a <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Capitol</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType>City</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
afterglow, I understood where I had to go the next day. Day 2 began with morning site-seeing of the
<st1:State><st1:place>Washington</st1:place></st1:State>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
monuments. <st1:State><st1:place>Washington</st1:place></st1:State>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
is a great city for museums and American history. As a Canadian who lived in the states (California)
– for 3+ years of my life I can say that I was blown away by the level of
access (everything is free) and quality of the pieces found in the museums
around the D.C. area. Unfortunately,
since 9/11 security has increased and everyone and everything is checked prior
to entry to malls, museums, etc.. – very sad, yet required in this day and
age. <o:p></o:p>

From a beer perspective, the day was spent sampling the
brews of John Harvard’s. <o:p></o:p>

(08/24) Dark black colour. Scent of roasted/burnt caramel, sweetness.
Hint of coffee in the flavour. (Ar=8,
Ap=3, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=10) <o:p></o:p>

Harvards American brown ale
(08/24) Dark red / brown colour. Nice tobacco coloured
head. Hoppy scent, very little sweet malt scent. Taste, however is balanced hoppy bitterness with sweet malt taste. Hints of caramel in the taste. (Ar=8, Ap=4, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=12)<o:p></o:p>

Harvards Hefeweizen
(08/24) Malty spice like scent. Strong banana and
clove scent also. Light yellow colour, cloudy, small
white foamy head. Good lacing. Strong banana and spice flavour.

(08/24) Nice over-hopped pale ale.
Copper colour.
Light white head. Spicy clove

Wow, another great day in terms of weather, sites and
beer. Day 3 was next – The beginning of
the conference – how would this impact my beer ratings?<o:p></o:p>

Day 3 was the first day of my conference. I was at sessions from <st1:time

Minute="0" Hour="18">6:00 PM</st1:time>,
so not much beer tasting during the day.
I had provided my wife with a list, and, based on the recommendations I
had read on Bov web site, she set out for Cairo Wine
& Liquor with a hand scribbled list of beers I could only hope to
sample. So, when I returned with a
weary mind from the conference only to find a boat load of beer waiting for me
in our hotel room. Whoopie!!!. I decided to pace myself, and so, day 3 only
involved 2 beer samplings, however both were Dogfish Head staples:<o:p></o:p>

Dogfish
Head World Wide Stout (18%) (08/25) This beer is evil
and not in a good sense. I like
stout. I like bold imperial stout. Stouts that get in your face and say: I ain’t going away until this glass is drained. You man
enough for this? hugh..punk? Sickly sweet scent. Too much of everything - too much malt, too
much hops. Thick and syrupy. No
head. Smells like a liquor. My god, over the top. Tone it down boys. (Ar=4,
Ap=3, Fl=4, Pa=3, Ov=10)<o:p></o:p>

Dogfish
Head 90 Minute IPA (08/25) Oh sweet mother of
Jesus. I am tasting this after trying
the World Wide stout. And the bottle is
a 750ml. Whoopie!!!! Absolutely beautiful massive hopped
taste. Magnificent.
Nasty, dirty, lovely. This is what I am
looking for. My search has come to an
end. I am a hop head. Orange brown colour. Big beautiful white head. Scent is one thing only - hops. Massive.
Great. Hops forever. (Ar=8, Ap=4, Fl=9, Pa=4, Ov=17)<o:p></o:p>

took in some very interesting lectures and, oh, did I forget, tried some very
good beers. …. Based on Agro0’s recommendations of places to visit, my wife and
I hit RFD for dinner. RFD is a very nice
establishment near the MCI centre and china town. I found it awesome. <o:p></o:p>

(08/26) – From RFD - Deep brown colour, light white /
tan head. Nice lacing in the glass.
Light aroma. Difficult to pick up any
real strong aromas. Tastes like a rauchbier. Smoky,
peaty with hints of bacon. (Ar=4, Ap=4,
Fl=8, Pa=4, Ov=14)<o:p></o:p>

<st1:place>Brooklyn</st1:place> Brown ale
(08/26) – From RFD - Deep brown, small white head. Slightly Reddish hue. Floral
well hopped scent. Nice spice undertones.
Caramel, molassis sweet taste. Slight floral hop scent and taste. Slightly (but ever so) slightly bitter
finish. (Ar=6, Ap=4, Fl=6,
Pa=3, Ov=12)<o:p></o:p>

Victory
Hop Devil Pocket Ale (08/26) From <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
- Dark Orange colour. Nice tan head. Scent of orange
and spice, some mild hoppy bitternes.
Flavour has a nice hop bite, but not over
bitter. Good malt balance, with a
wonderful finish. (Ar=7, Ap=4,
Fl=8, Pa=4, Ov=16)<o:p></o:p>

Tuppers Hop Pocket Ale
(08/26) Rusty, orange colour, clear little or no
head. Scent is biterness personified. Intensely floral and bitter taste. Aftertaste is a bit harsh. Interesting. (Ar=6,
Ap=3, Fl=6, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock (08/26) From <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an

= eep dark brown colour,
nice white head. Aroma is of toffee,
caramel, hints of chocolate. Flavour isn’t as big as aroma. Subtle malty sweet

passed away while I sat through MPLS simulation and modeling seminars. After arriving back at the hotel, we took in

beer tastings.

Ommegang
(08/27) – From <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
- Aroma has very strong alcohol notes.
At first this threw me off. The
scent was almost like a whiskey or bourbon. But, after the first taste, things began to
settle down. Taste starts off slightly
bitter, almost like dark chocolate.
Then, the malty / sweet elements come to the
front. Deep dark in colour. Nice light brown head. Very good beer. (Ar=3,
Ap=4, Fl=8, Pa=4, Ov=15)<o:p></o:p>

Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA (08/27) From Cairo - Orange colour, slightly cloudy. Spicy hopped scent. Nice hoppy taste. (Ar=7, Ap=3, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

(08/27) - Very strong candy/strawberry aroma - overpowering. Cloudy appearance -
orangish / yellow colour. Thin white foamy head. Way too sweet for my

Day 6 – BIG

place to keep me honest)<o:p></o:p>

Day 6 began with a beer tasting level of optimism which
meant – yes – today would be the beer sampling day of the tour. Specifically, I was able to hit RFD for
lunch, sample <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
beers during the early evening and go to Brickskeller

20037) for dinner. Whooopie!!!!!. By
the way, I really liked the ambiance at Brickskeller
– hip, young crowd, uptown (<st1:Street><st1:address>Dupont
Circle</st1:address></st1:Street>) area of town. Only drawback was a relatively young and
inexperienced waitress. <o:p></o:p>

Samuel
Smiths Oatmeal Stout (08/28) Tasted at Brickskeller - Bitter burnt caramel, aroma. Dark black opaque colour. Little or no head. Molassis taste,
burnt caramel at best. Good sweet stout - Slightly warmer than I would have
expected. (Ar=6, Ap=3,
Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

De
Dolle Stille Nacht (08/28) Tasted at Brickskeller - Candy scent.
Sweet citurs smell and flavour. Dark yellow colour
with nice white head. Spicy finish, with earthy undertones. (Ar=6, Ap=3, Fl=8, Pa=4, Ov=14)<o:p></o:p>

Ommegang Rare Vos (08/28) From <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
(and my wife) - If I had to narrow this fine beer down to one word it would be
herbal. The aroma is almost veggy with a spicy, not quite floral finish. Appearance is like a light version of Maudite - Light orange colour
with nice white lacy foamy head. Stands up well in the glass. Flavour is much
lighter - very floral, orange - has an almost champagne constitution. (Ar=6, Ap=4, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

- Dark colour - opaque. Slightly tangy scent, with
hint of molasses. Taste is
slightly on the bitter side, and slightly thin. (Ar=5,

- Dark colour, light tan head. Malty taste with hint
caramel, but generally thin. (Ar=6, Ap=3, Fl=6, Pa=3, Ov=11)<o:p></o:p>

Mendocino
Black Hawk Stout (08/28) From <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an

- Black colour, not opaque. Little or no head. Slightly metallic scent, with light roasted
caramel. Taste is a burnt, slightly
bitter roasted taste. Fairly thin taste.

Delirium
Tremens (08/28) Tasted at RFD - Light yellow colour, small white foamy head. Sweet aroma, bitter and
fruity taste. (Ar=6, Ap=3,

Stoudts Fat dog Stout
(08/28) Tasted at RFD - Dark colour, deep deep brown or black.
Scent of caramel or chocolate.
Goes down like a porter. Not as
big a flavour as expected. (Ar=8,
Ap=3, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

Fordham
Wisteria Wheat (08/28) Tasted at RFD - Scent seems very
close to Schneider Weisse. Spice, coriander,
orange hints with definite banana.
Nice banana taste. Orange cloudy colour with light head. (Ar=8, Ap=3, Fl=8, Pa=3, Ov=14)<o:p></o:p>

Dogfish
Head Shelter Pale Ale (08/28)
Tasted at RFD - Light copper colour. Light white head. Lemony / floral scent with malty taste. (Ar=8, Ap=3, Fl=6, Pa=3, Ov=11) <o:p></o:p>

Day 7 was one of the hottest days in <st1:State><st1:place>Washington</st1:place></st1:State>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
of our trip. My wife and I were intent
on seeing the sites of <st1:City><st1:place>Georgetown</st1:place></st1:City>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>. Very cool town, nice university, great main street (‘M’ street), nice shops and stores. While in <st1:City><st1:place>Georgetown</st1:place></st1:City>&l t;span
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>,
we hit J. Pauls for lunch and a sample beer. We also hit prospect street to see where the
Exorcist was filmed. Ooooooh
so scary!!!!!<o:p></o:p>

Ommegang Hennepin
(08/29) Tasted from <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
- Nice golden yellow cloudy appearance.
Good head formation and lacing.
Orange spice scent with a champagne like quality. Flavour
is very subtle and surprised me considering the bold aroma. Nice mellow balance with a slight yeasty / malty finish. (Ar=7, Ap=4, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=14)<o:p></o:p>

Foggy
Bottom Ale (08/29) Tasted from <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an

- Reddish brown in colour. Light white head. Metallic / grassy aroma,
slight malt scent also. Taste is slighty sweet, with
hints of cider or apples. Little or no hoppy taste. (Ar=5, Ap=3, Fl=6, Pa=3, Ov=10)<o:p></o:p>

- Orange colour, white head very intense
carbonation. Slightly bitter hopped
aroma, touch of spice. Slightly bitter taste with a light caramel sweetness /

One thing worth mentioning – We had tickets for CNN’s
Crossfire show at <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>George</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName>Washington</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType>University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place >. Tickets were free and I have to say, we had
the best time – really fascinating to see the behind the scenes of one of my
favorite CNN shows. The hosts were
Tucker Carlson and James Carvel – big time interesting. <o:p></o:p>

Day 8 – Return

The following day we caught our plane and headed back to <st1:City><st1:place>Toronto</st1:place></st1:City><s pan
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>. However, I did stash away some beers to try
when I got back. Upon arriving and
getting back home the first thing I did was queue up the stashed bad boys for
sampling in the fridge. And here we

Amber (09/02) Purchased from <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>
- Deep amber colour, white light head. Intense hoppy
scent, very very bitter with a slight floral and
spicy nose. Flavour
is more balanced, with a light spicy taste and bitter finish. (Ar=8, Ap=4, Fl=7, Pa=3, Ov=13)<o:p></o:p>

Traquair House Ale
(08/31) Purchased from Cairo. Brownish
red colour, cloudy.
Light white head. Slightly spicy
scent with malty
hints. Taste is very smooth, with
a hint of vanilla which combines very nicely with the sweet malty
finish. (Ar=7, Ap=3, Fl=8, Pa=4, Ov=16)<o:p></o:p>

Traquair Jacobite
Ale (08/31) Purchased from <st1:City><st1:place>Cairo</st1:place></st1:City><sp an
style=’font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial;mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"’>. Deep black colour,
opaque. Rich and creamy tan coloured head. Aroma
is licorice and spice, hint of chocolate-orange. Incredibly smooth and rich ale. Sweet taste, hint of bitter licorice and big
malt finish. Very very
