Commercial Description:
In the beginning of 2006 the people behind Denmark's leading beer bar "Ølbaren", the leading beer shop "Ølbutikken" and Ølfabrikken sat down together to plan a beer that was to be only served from tap at Ølbaren and only sold in bottles from Ølbutikken. After a night of drinking it ended up with a massive Russian Imperial Chocolate Stout using ingredients from four continents. South american Cocoa, Asian coffee, North american hops and European malts. Ølfabrikken ØL is, of course, unpasteurized, unfiltered and cask conditioned like all of our beers. Introduced at 'Københavnske Øldage 2006'.

Pours thick black with a small brown head. Roasted barley, ginger, sweet coffee, molassis and oak come through the aroma. Also seems to be a bit vineous and show hints of vanilla (or is that oak?). Heavy and thick in the mouthful, so thick you can hardly sense the carbonation. Still manages to remain really smooth and shows very little warmth. Flavour of charred wood, dark dark chocolate, some green wood, chicory, no significant bitterness from hops or roast. Smooth long finish leaves hints of vanilla and chocolate and an ever so slight warmth. Brilliant stuff.

Swing top bottle. a black as coal beer with a small and fast disappearing dark brown head. The aroma is malty with notes of chocolate, coffee, licorice and roasted malts. There are also some aromatic hops that shine through the roastiness. Rich, complex and powerful aroma. The flavour has a good sweetness and overall the chocolate notes prevail on the others. Good roastiness. Full body, soft/average carbonation, long finish with medium bitterness from both roasted malts and hops (but more from the roasted malts). Complex, not overly syrupy and flavourful. A loss this is no longer brewed.

(bottle thanks Marsiblursi!) Pours black with a tan head. Aroma is initially very strong with chocolate, roasted malt, and some smoke towards the end of the smell. There are also smells of green pepper and licorice that appear upon warming. The tastes are chocolate, light roast, coffee, and a slight tartness on the finish. The taste gets a little harsh and astringent as the beer warms though. Mouthfeel is fairly thick with a roasty finish as well, and smooth carbonation. Not too bad.

500 ml bottle, 2005 from Øbutikken in København. Pours absolutely opaque ebony color, with a thick tan head that diminishes quickly, leaving some lacing. Huge roasty and chocolaty aroma, with hints of dark fruits, florals and coffee - mostly bitter chocolate though. The flavor is an interesting blend, as the commercial description indicates, with heavy roastiness, bitter chocolate, acidic coffee, and a bold herbal and floral hoppiness that also lends some ashiness lands this beer outside of the familiar Impy Stout territory, though I have to say I find a bit of metallic finish, which distracts from the other wonderful characteristics. Full body, smooth and lightly carbonated. .
