Commercial Description:
Editor's note: Brewed by Ølfabrikken at Het Anker, Mechelen, Belgium.

Ølfabrikken Abbey Ale is our interpretation of the dark and strong ales brewed in the Belgian monasteries. A more than hundred year old yeast strain provides the beer with notes of raisins and prunes supplemented by a discrete spicy aroma from coriander. The flavor is big and vinous and dominated by caramel. Enjoy it with braised meat, game and ripe cheese. Of course unpasteurized, unfiltered and refermented in the bottle.

750ml bottle @Vero Beach Throwdown-pours a dissipating off white head and copper color. Aroma is medium malt, spices, yeast. Taste is medium malt, spices, yeast, some earthy hops bite, musty. Thanks to Beerlando for sharing.

Courtesy of CigarCityBrew. Pours hazy copper with wispy tan head. The aroma is fruit and malt sweetness moving into tart notes. Pretty mild. The taste is caramel, dark fruitiness with figs, prunes and raisins. Nice. It gets rose pedal-ish and swirls of sweet honey too. Seems very yummy.

2008-07-11. Brown body with a modest beige head. (3+) Aroma is a bit boozy up front, alcohol soaked caramel notes, booze grows as it warms. Flavour is similar with sweet sugars, caramel and malt, dry alcoholic undertones with some hop notes. (7+) Smooth average to medium palate. Pretty nice, but rough around the edges and did not quite meet my high hopes for it as this was one I had been wanting to try. Bottle shared by Blankboy

From the "Open Eyes" tasting. 2006 Bottle with an entirely Danish label. Pours with a light brown head covering a dark brown body with tons of yeastys floating about. Aroma of alcohol, Grand Marnier, burbon, and dark fruits. Taste has some elements of oxidation, maple syrup, raisins, and clove. Still lively carbonation with a somewhat thin mouthfeel.

Bottle (750ml). Shared by blankboy with gregclow, jerc, mabel & tupalev. Deep amber pour, smallish creamy off-white head, lots of floaties. Classic dubbel aroma - caramel malt, rich spicy yeast, moderate alcohol - quite appealing. Very similar to Westmalle Dubbel - malty, yeasty, complex - average body, nice malty and spicy finish. Quite good.

750ml from From the Vine, Columbus. I had no idea this was retired. Anyways, it’s a very solid dubbel, more refreshing and less cloying than a number of lesser offerings. Very lively pour with a fast-rising head, there’s plenty to admire in the handsome deep brown pour. Strong raisin notes emerge in the aroma, along with some candied malts, caramel, and just a hint of pepper and yeast. Crisp and active mouthfeel, almost champagne-like in its intensity sometimes. This doesn’t really detract from the style, but it sure is quirky with the heavy and sweet flavors going on. The finish is extremely dry, unexpectedly enough, but it works with this overall distinctive take on the style. Nice one, compares favorably with Midnight Sun’s Maitress du Moine.
