Goldorak (427), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 26, 2007 Thanks to Rastacouere who sent this over from Denmark!
You’d think this beer was once a little more reddish than it is, now it’s sort of an off-brown murky color. For a high octane Beer, the head was pretty solid.
My first whiff was taken nonchalantly - I suppose I was in the middle of a conversation - and totally took me by surprise. Very strong perfume, somewhere between musky cologne and rose water they use in middle-eastern desserts. After my nostrils got saturated it got more of a sherry cask with a dollop of fruit juice thing going on. Very dynamic and evolutive aroma, good stuff indeed!
Lively, robust carbonation - another shocker for me, considering 13% ABV and a swig-top bottle - but it pushed the fruit flavor really hard, a pleasant sour raspberry then mingled with a round, caramel toffee malt richness. A tad bit of heat towards the end, but the mild acidity helped even things out, there is now way I would have guessed it was that boozy, which to me is a sign of success right off the bat. The fact that it tastes so good is like an added bonus!
I’ve never heard of this Beer, had no expectations from it, had it right after a phenomenal brew, yet it still managed to shine. My favorite so far from this great brewery. Denmark just went up several notches on my "countries I must visit" list.
General_Gao (2579), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Sep 1, 2008 Thanks to iowaherkeye for bringing this bottle to his ’farewell to Iowa’ tasting. Poured a hazy brown-orange color with an off white head. Smelled of pear and raspberry. Medium bodied and sweet with a syrupy mouth feel. I tasted raspberry cough syrup, pear, and toffee. Lots of berries. With the exception of the cough syrup note, I wouldn’t have had any idea this was 13%. Not bad. pepsican (765), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Aug 31, 2008 Thanks mr. iowaherkeye. This beer makes more sense after I figured out what they were going for. Cola brown pour with a small white head. Raspberry and cherry aroma. Flavor was cherry cough syrup, raspberry, toffee, brown sugar, and caramel. Rough fruit finish. Ethereal (927), London, Greater London, England Jul 2, 2008 Bottle at Chris_O’s 19th April 2008 tasting, courtesy of The Wolf. Wonderful raspberry and malt aroma makes up for the murky brown appearance. The tart raspberries dominate the flavour too and this doesn’t work quite as well as on the nose. Smooth and leaves flavour in the mouth without clinging too much. Nice stuff. akevitt (96), Valhalla, Minnesota, USA Jun 17, 2008 Rate from Oct 2007 [Bottle] Thanks to BDR for sharing. The beer was murky brown with light tan head. In the aroma there was cherries and raspberries. In the flavor there was cherries and raspberries and something else... The alcohol was well hidden. Smooth tart acidic finish. Much better than anything from New Glarus. harrisoni (5382), Ashford, Kent, England Apr 25, 2008 Bottle at Chris_o’s The Wolf tasting. Thanks to thewolf for bringing it and to Duff for sharing. Raspberry tart on aroma. That’s lovely. Good in mouth too. Bit too much of hot alcohol though. Good aroma, then just too hot.
