jerohen (1466), Bussum, Netherlands May 28, 2007 Pitch black, small brown head. Strong rauchbier-like aroma, impressive. Sweet roasted smoked malty flavour. Lasting bitter finish. This porter tastes like a rauchbier. Good! Beer_2000 (1198), Kristiansand, Norway Sep 23, 2007 500ml bottle. Almost black body with a beige head. Roast, barbeque and bacon are dominating the aroma. Flavor is sweet, malty, smoky and more harmonized than Bamberg style rauchbier. Personally I find the Bamberg style interesting, but not very balanced. You might compare them with smoked pilsner versus smoked ale. Ale is basically more flavorful and would support the flavors from the smoke better. This ale is complex in a way, but not so easy to recognize due to the rather extreme smoke notes. What I’m trying to say here is that I like this a lot, but can’t really tell so much about the beer behind this. The overall impression is just very flavorful and elegant in a brutal way. If you don’t like the smoked flavor in a beer, stay away! coldbrewky (496), Saugerties, New York, USA Aug 7, 2007 Bottle compliments of Maria! Swingtop opens with gusto and unleashes a smoky nose of fresh wood over a campfire. Pours an oily semi-translucent brown. Thin head. Smoke of the nose rolls unencumbered into the body and mouthfeel of this beauty. Oh yes, this is what I desire in my own homebrew. Dark malts abound but lean harder on the black pat and less on the choc. A dryer finish with a gentle crispness at the front of your tounge. kramer (1875), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 14, 2008 50 cl bottle, via anders37. Pours a very dark brown body with just a tiny bit of light passing thru on the edges. Small wispy film of beige head. Extremely small streams of tiny bubbles. Amazing nose, very aggressive campfire smokiness with great chocolate and roast notes. A little chalky yeast and coffee. The smoke is a little more subtle on the flavor, more of an accent on the middle and finish. Otherwise it’s an excellent Porter in its own right. Chocolaty and roasty with a great dry yeasty undertone. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice fairly creamy texture and perfect moderate super fine carbonation bubbles on the tongue. This was just about right up my alley, two favorite styles in one. I love it. I’d drink alot of this if I could. Comments: Talk about a winning combination, two of the best brewers in Denmark joining their forces to brew a smoked porter. It is a surprisingly subtle offering, though with a terrific mouthfeel. Archetypal poise.
