Soonah (491), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Jul 16, 2007 From mcbackus via trade. Thanks again! The pour was as dark a pour as I can remember with a nice truly brown head. Little if any lacing. The aroma was chocolate, brown sugar, smoke, smoked meats and some bitter coffee. The flavor followed suit with bitter coffee and smoked meat leading the charge early. The chocolate came to life about haflway through. The finished lingered a bit. The mouthfeel was above average. Velvety smooth but it did have some watery characteristics to it. Very nice.
Philip (383), Illinois, USA Sep 2, 2008 Bottle. I found this to be a solid porter, but not an overwhelmingly good one by a long stretch. The pour and head color are certainly right, and the standard notes of chocolate, burnt sugar, a touch of coffee, and vanilla are on the palate. But what’s not there is the complexity that one normally associates with a beer ranked this highly on this site. And moreover, the finish isn’t nearly as long-lasting as a number of other beers in this overall percentage range. So while I found this to be a good beer, one that was well crafted and well extracted, I also found it to be underwhelming. And although this doesn’t factor into the rating, the ratio of price of the bottle to the quality greatly favors the former. Drew (2376), Kent, Ohio, USA Sep 1, 2008 This porter poured an oil black, short tan head - great lacing. Aroma was caramel chocolate, coffee and licorice, and maybe some rich dark fruit too - wow! Taste followed the same interesting path, thick bodied, long lingering flavor. Spectacular. EHopper (129), Minnesota, USA Aug 31, 2008 What can I say. This is simply a bottle of black beer gold. It is smooth as silk, with a burst of flavor. Everything you could ever want from a porter is in there, with a nice, burnt wood flavor tying all that dark, malty goodness together. Nightfall (310), Athens, Greece Aug 29, 2008 Updated: Sep 3, 2008Swing top found at Beer Paradise in Holstebro. Black colored with brown head. Roasted malt aroma with hints of caramel. Sweet taste of coffee and chocolate with hints of caramel and nuts. Very well combined. An excellent brew jehoey (711), Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 27, 2008 aroma was deep and complex, roast with some deep toffee notes in the backround. the flavor is very complex, notes of tobacco, raisin, biscuit, a bit tarry and a bit smokey. poured very vicous and black with brown around the edges and a very tan head. very full bodied mouthfeel. an excellent beer appriciable on many levels though it wasn’t my favorite.
