hiddenvariable (181), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 11, 2008 bottle. pours a dark, dark, nearly opaque mahogany with a thick, dense, tan head that takes a while to bubble away. rich, decadent smell of roasted malt, molasses, chocolate, black cherries and cocoa. there’s a hint of a spicy hop laying the background as well. taste is a all of that and a bit more, with bitter cocoa, lightly roasted coffee-ness, a bit less molasses, and with some more spicy notes and touches of smoke and wood. moderate bitterness and sweetness on the end, but both stick around forever, and go great with the amazing silky-smooth mouthfeel. quite thick for a porter, reaching almost imperial-stout-like viscosity, with a ton of carbonation. yeah, it’s really thick. i feel like repeating that. and that mouthfeel is so perfect. smooth as glass but slick as teflon, even a bit creamy, and it just helps move the wonderful roasty flavors all over your mouth and causes everything to linger well after the beer is gone. on first sip, i was somewhat underwhelmed, but the more i drink, the more i like this beer.
Tejas (581), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 21, 2008 Wow, never had a beer with a thick creamy palate like this one. Huge chocolate aroma hit me right in the nose as soon as I began to pour. Easily, the richest beer I’ve ever tried. Taste like fudge. Delicious! Only downfall would be the head didn’t last very long but that’s being very very picky. Soenderskov (28), Dragør, Denmark Jul 21, 2008 Can 0,33l. I can see nothing special in this beer. The power is missing. I was very sad because i have look forward to taste this winning beer :-( fidel (69), Livermore, California, USA Jul 20, 2008 Black, Roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, Dark fruits, caramel, creamy, little alcohol, little hops. afireinside96 (346), Mountville, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle shared by Death with a K. Thanks Keath. Pours extremely dark brown, nearly black, with a brown head. Smells of booze, like a dark rum, licorice root, & coffee. Taste is once again boozy with some chocolate, coffee, licorice, and dark fruit notes. Really this is more of an imperial stout than a porter. Alcohol is a bit too noticeable for my tastes. Nice slow sipper but maybe just a tad overrated. Hank1980 (327), Athens, Georgia, USA Jul 17, 2008 Bottle from Citybeer. Poured a dark brown with a small creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit. Taste is very malty (roasted), with coffee, caramel, and a bit of hops. Mouth is pretty creamy. Very nice porter.
