Lothore (226), California, USA Jun 10, 2008 A- Pours pitch black with a small, brown head.
S- Smell is HUGE. Vanilla, spices, cream, hints of coffee.
T- Taste is big as well. Starts off sweet, moves into coffee, christmas spices, creamy.
M- Thick with low carbonation.
D- This is essentially an imperial stout. Huge flavor. I enjoyed it but I just can’t seem to get past the coffee flavor in some beers and with this one that is certainly the case.
EricE (261), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Sep 21, 2008 Opaque black pour with a tan head. Chocolate milk aroma with raisins and berries. Very sweet flavor with berries and a little bit of lactic sourness. Creamy chocolate throughout. Bitter coffee finish with lots of roast and a bit of alcohol. Overall, a very good porter. Alcohol is hidden well. andersand (25), Sweden Sep 17, 2008 One of my favourite porters, the real danish sort guld. Has plenty of chocolate and neat lactal notes. Perfectly balanced bitter aftertaste. Light bodied and smooth, easy to drink but not at all tasteless. Todeon (214), Höllviken, Sweden Sep 13, 2008 Draft @ EPBF Nice black color with some fizzy beige head. Looks pretty thin. Aroma is lots of roasted malt and licorice. Mouthfeel is a bit thin as expected but still good. Taste is really rich with lots of roasted notes and licorice, but also some coffee and fruit. cab (760), Denmark Sep 12, 2008 Can.50cl. The color looked like dark espresso. The head was thin and dark tan. Wonderfully rich nose, molasses, chocolate, coffee. Philip (389), Illinois, USA Sep 2, 2008 Bottle. I found this to be a solid porter, but not an overwhelmingly good one by a long stretch. The pour and head color are certainly right, and the standard notes of chocolate, burnt sugar, a touch of coffee, and vanilla are on the palate. But what’s not there is the complexity that one normally associates with a beer ranked this highly on this site. And moreover, the finish isn’t nearly as long-lasting as a number of other beers in this overall percentage range. So while I found this to be a good beer, one that was well crafted and well extracted, I also found it to be underwhelming. And although this doesn’t factor into the rating, the ratio of price of the bottle to the quality greatly favors the former.
