yespr (6363), Copenhagen O, Denmark Mar 9, 2008 ZBF2008: From tap. Pours dark brown with a dense/creamy tan head. Aroma is spiced, annis seed and something else. Flavour is a bit herbal, spiced and with a solid annis seed flavour, very distinct/dominant. Light roasted malt flavour. Ends much the same way. Well brewed, but too spiced for my liking.
oh6gdx (5901), Vaasa, Finland Aug 17, 2008 Bottle (from Cracked Kettle). Deep hazy murky brown colour with mediumsized beige head. A bit lively beer. Aroma is spices, licorice, yeast and some rather sweet notes. Flavour is much the same, and surprisingly sweet. Murky nut brown color, small beige head. Strong anise-licorice nose (Het Anker anyone?). Medium, or even full-bodied, kind of syrupy palate. Anise, licorice, cardboardish yeast, kandi sugar. Sticky hops in the finish. Obvious copy of Gouden Carolus Christmas, yeast(?) just makes this a bit harsh. sayravai (3047), Helsinki, Finland Jul 7, 2008 (Bottled) Hazy dark ruby-brown with a small, firm and tanned head. Strong, herby and sweetish-malty aroma of anise and licorice. Anisey-spicy aroma with roasted-smoky malt, and a salty-smoky, sweetish and ashy finish. Medium-bodied, roasty-ashy-syrupy palate with quite low carbonation. A quite strange combination of Belgian sweet stout, Gouden Carolus Christmas, and burned color malt. Somehow it does work, though. Ashiness and spices are toned down quite a bit after pouring in the yeast. Bov (4623), Bienne, Switzerland Jun 6, 2008 from crackedkettle.com - pours a hazy dark ruby-brown colour, solid and persistent creamy beige foam; aroma of ginger, bread and apple; sweet and juicy, low carbonation and a respectable malt body; finishes a bit sticky and bitter with a long bready and gently fruity aftertaste
