Just like a gambler doubling down in Vegas so is this beer on the hops. The heavy handed additions of Magnum, Simcoe, and Chinook drives the hop charge over the top. Malt, being the counterpart in this beer, is built upon Pale, Crystal, Carapils, and Munich. All this combined creates a royal flush of a brew. If you donít LOVE hops, then donít even bother!

Two bottles sent from a friend in Oregon. Given the shelf life, I didnít expect these to be the best samples of what Shawn Kelso can do now that heís at 10 Barrel. But still, having known him way back in high school, he always finds a way to get his signature hop face-slap into all of his IPAs. Pours cloudy orange, almost looks like an orange-amber hefeweizen, until the aroma reaches out and grabs your nostrils. Soapy white head. Simcoe aroma, pine tree, cantaloupe melon, mango, papaya, pineapple juice. Definitely hoppy and long-standing bitter. If I close my eyes, itís somewhat similar to Hopsickle. Would love to had tried this fresh on tap instead of the last two bottles on the shelf in a store in Oregon. Still, it has Shawnís signature all over it.

On tap at the Boise BP In a snifter, slight hazy orange/light amber with a small sandy head. Easy muted deep hoppy aroma, as if the fresh sharp brightness had faded a bit. Decent bitterness but not a bomb, Full hoppy flavors and moderate malt back end. Pretty big bite at the end. Ive had plent of DIPAs that were bigger hop monsters but this is balanced and easy...even at over 9%

Draft. Amber beer with a cream head. Grapefruit and pine aroma. Big grapefruit and pine flavor. Medium bodied. Very good bitterness. Grapefruit and pine linger.

22oz bomber that I forgot about and was buried in the back of the fridge...doh! Pours a clean slight copper tinted gold with minimal head that looks to be on the dense and sticky side. Still intense and fresh hop nose, a blend of sweet and slight spicy pine, citrus and a bit of tropical fruitiness that gets lost a bit in the crystal malt as it warms, it starts to have some faint garlic/green onion. Heavier mouth feel, somewhat sticky. Sweeter, pretty intensely bitter pine, green onion, garlic, tropical pine in the middle, some pithy citrus but then makes way to some serious bittering with slight ice tea. I did drink this fresh too and it hasnít fallen off by much. Not bad, just not really the profile I enjoy in a IIPA.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. This is all hops, resin, citrus. The malts are subtle, some sweetness. This is a well crafted beer.

Bottle:   Fiery amber, fairly clear, moderate to large foamy off-white head, nice lacing.   Strong sweet malty nose, thick pine and citrus peel.   Similar tongue, some tea leaves as well.   Smooth, not real bitter.   MIld sweetness, faint floral and citrus aspects.   Lingering tea leaves.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Finishes with a lot of tea flavor, minor citrus.   Not a bitter example, not a big malty nor hoppy aspect either.   I would say almost an IIPA, clean enough tho.

Bomber from BW. Clear gold pour with a short, brief white head which persists as a rim and leaves moderate lace. Nose is fairly balanced, with some pine, light roast malt and a hint of mango and apple, However there is also a rubbery smell that is off-putting. Medium body with moderate, fine carbonation. Pine, toast, dandelion and, again, some rubber and cardboard. Finish is long and bitter, but ABV remains in defilade. Lots of bitterness here, some of it unpleasant, but not much aroma. I let this one warm and drank from two different glasses (neither had any sign of being dirty), still not enjoying this IIPA. Bought the same time as the other 10 Barrel brews Iíve enjoyed, so mishandling is less likely.

Big, piney, grapefruity, resinous, just as an excellent DIPA should be. Packing for BKK right now so thatís all I got to say! This is damn good!

Tropical fruit dank and pine on the nose. Caramel and pale malt mostly but big hops in the nose. Pours golden with a creamy head and nice lace. Flavors of big resinous dank and pine pale malt sweetness with a touch of caramel and tropical fruit hop notes as well. Big lingering bitterness and chewy resins. Nice iipa.
