Just like a gambler doubling down in Vegas so is this beer on the hops. The heavy handed additions of Magnum, Simcoe, and Chinook drives the hop charge over the top. Malt, being the counterpart in this beer, is built upon Pale, Crystal, Carapils, and Munich. All this combined creates a royal flush of a brew. If you don’t LOVE hops, then don’t even bother!

Two bottles sent from a friend in Oregon. Given the shelf life, I didn’t expect these to be the best samples of what Shawn Kelso can do now that he’s at 10 Barrel. But still, having known him way back in high school, he always finds a way to get his signature hop face-slap into all of his IPAs. Pours cloudy orange, almost looks like an orange-amber hefeweizen, until the aroma reaches out and grabs your nostrils. Soapy white head. Simcoe aroma, pine tree, cantaloupe melon, mango, papaya, pineapple juice. Definitely hoppy and long-standing bitter. If I close my eyes, it’s somewhat similar to Hopsickle. Would love to had tried this fresh on tap instead of the last two bottles on the shelf in a store in Oregon. Still, it has Shawn’s signature all over it.

The glorious creamy mouth feel on the Imperial IPA is uber delicious as piney notes play with the perfect malts. The finish is very nice. The lingering sweetness of the hops is superb. One very nice Double IPA.

Bomber from Liquor Max in Loveland. No bottle date - hate that. Hazy tannish orange pour with an off-white head leaving spotty lace. Aroma has citrus, pineapple, toffee, and that tangy very sweet simcoe hop smell. Taste is of tangy pine sweet fruits, pineapple, and toffee. Overlayered, syrupy and medium bodied with a bit of an alcohol presence. Finishes shorter than expected (a simcoe characteristic, it seems - anecdotally), more tangy sweet than bitter. Was really expecting a lot after the IPA, but this is not a deeper/thicker version of that, instead a stand alone solid, not better, brew. 14.3

22 oz bottle from Mulberry Max into a pint glass. Clear orange appearance with a lacy white head. Full bodied, thick and hoppy. Citrus and piney hops are balanced by a caramel malt sweetness. Solid DIPA here, easier to drink than most. Nice

Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau. Loads of pine and moderate citrus, with a strong biscuity malt backing to support well. Hazy orange with full white head lingering nicely in a tulip glass. Taste is orange and moderate low pine, with a moderate bitterness. The alcohol is well hidden in this 9.3%er, can’t find it at all...making this a dangerous, tasty brew!

Dark orange pour from bottle at ganeks. White head. Fruity and bitter. Citrus and tropical happiness. Pretty big IPA. Grapefruit and apricot. Yum

Bomber. Grapefruit citrus hop aroma with pine resin and floral hop flavors. Pours copper colored with a large, soapy white head with excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with grapefruit citrus flavors as well as some floral hop flavors. Finishes dry but quite smooth with slight pine resin bitterness, but not a lot, and grapefruit acidity coating the palate. Nice, remarkably smooth double IPA.

Pour from a 22oz bomber. Slightly hazy amber color with a white head and lots of white lacing. Tremendous hop nose and taste. Low bitterness, just how I love my DIPAs. Excellent.

BottleN/A. Copper orange, light amber hue. Big juicy grapefruit, pungent, sharp white rind. More of a honey sweetness than caramel. Fresh honey melon up front, a peach type sweetness lingers with a heavy alcohol sensation but not quite burning. Smooth flavors, blend well together, big hop bitterness without a leafy, medicinal taste. Love the Magnum hops for bittering, so clean.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy dark golden orange with a medium creamy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is fruity, resiny, dank hops with a little caramel / crystal malt.

The flavor is a little sweet bready malt with a little fruit and a lot of piney resiny hops that have a bit of a harsh tarry alcoholic aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice hop bomb of a DIPA.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, very well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, with Belgian curtain lacing, over a hazy, gold (SRM 5) body.....nose is floral honey, with grapefruit from the hops, light cereal from the malts, minimal esters, balance to the hops.......taste is sweet with honey tones, light toasted cereal malts, heavy grapefruit, pine, light floral tones, licorice, from the hops, finishing with a lingering bitterness, balance to the hops........mouth feel, body heavy of medium, sticky, alcohol warmth present, carbonation low, low acid. This is an enormous American I/DIPA, with heavy American hops. It is very hop dominated, with only slight malt complexity. Perhaps a bit more caramel/crystal malts would add a bit, but then sweetness might become a problem. BJCP 7/3/15/4/7
