COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Bottle, pours a hazy, pale yellow with white head. Strong spice aroma - I get caraway, ginger, rosemary, and juniper. Flavor is the same as the aroma with citrus and wheat tones. The flavor is somewhat disappointing in that it is not as strong as the aroma. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and tends to get watery near the finish.

[Bottle] Pours pale golden with a small white head. Aroma is juniper, anise, a hint of ginger--but not too much. A little caraway and bay leaf were very present in the taste to go along with the juniper. A little sourness also in there. Medium-thin mouthfeel with a long, spicy finish. Overall this was a very unique beer. The taste was a little lacking in comparison to the aroma though.

Cloudy gold, witbier-looking ale - there is some wheat, citrus and grass in the aroma, but the smell is mostly dominated by a strong cocktail of spices and herbs (ginger, anise, and rosemary are most prominent, but there are some notes of thyme and mint leaves) - fairly tart, nearly sour up front, followed by a soft wheaty character that lays the foundation for the spices to come to the fore - ginger, rosemary and thyme are fairly strong components, buy there is a bitter herb I can’t place, and the bay becomes noticeable near the end - some peppery character arrives late - I can see how people would be put off by this, but I love food with complex spice combinations (like indian food), and this would go really well with stuff like that.

Another neat brew from these folks. Bottle shared by Robert at State Line. Pour was pale hazy yellow, small thin head on top. The aroma was herbs and some spice first and foremost, lemons, some wheaty or hay notes too. Flavor followed the aroma, the spices taking front stage, bay leaves, rosemary, light mint and ginger, subtle sour-citrusey-lemon character in the musty hay-like wheaty type malts. I have no idea what Grut was really like or if they got this one "right," but I liked it. As sloth noted while drinking, a touch more sour character would have been welcomed. As usual, thanks, Robert, for sharing!

Pour is a lemonaid lookalike with a small white head. Aroma is of super amounts of spice. What spice? All of them. I could not even begin to name them all. Flavor is a bit weaker and watery. You deffinatly get your spice but nothing like the aroma. It leaves a prickly floral on the tounge as this goes down. This will be deffinalty something you have never had before.

Bottle shared by Paul. Yellow gold with a small head. Paul says his is green but I think he’s high on absinthye. There are so many spices in this beer, you could probably taste anything that comes to mind. I get cinnamon, parsely, all of the edible flowers Cuvee des Fluers has and then some. Tastes like a bathroom potpouri. too many spices.

Cloudy, pale straw color with a greenish tinge. Spicy aroma reminiscent of a bucket of pickled hearing, a bit of sour with a definite menthol cough drop edge. Fairly weak flavor. but what their is matches aroma down to a menthol after taste. Interesting enough to share with someone but not something I need to drink again.

Very cloudy pale white body with a small frothy white head. Very citrusy aroma with tons of spice, especially rosemary. Citrus flavor, light lemon, more rosemary as a fairly dominant flavor, light ginger more to the background. Medium light body with moderate carbonation.
