Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Bottle. Hazy yellow golden with fluffy white lacing head. Aroma immediately reminds me of the dentist’s office, spicy and herbal with a distinct paste quality, crushed mint (and L. says a bit of chamomile!) and a light malt base. Interesting, though I think I still long for Heavyweight. Again, strange to have such a dry mf and taste with no hops. Creamy medium body, some incense, could it be sage? Easy drinking, balance with true craftsmanship! How to rate one of these?

PPWD Show. Herbal in evey way, Rosemary, ginger and everything else. Very unique beer that I personally could not drink on a day to day basis. It should pair well with some roasted red meats, or game, or perhaps used to boil brats. Glad I tried it.

Bottle from SoLan, thanks Alan. Poured a hazy yellow color with a quarter-inch white head that faded to a ring. Interesting, spicy aroma with hints of ginger, caraway, wheat, and a moderate earthy, spicy fruitiness with hints of lemon zest, orange, and some anise. Crisp, lightly tart entry with some light lemon and a smooth wheatiness that transitions into a moderate spiciness with hints of ginger, caraway, anise, and rosemary that finishes lightly dry with a nice peppery flavor. Moderate carbonation with a nice crisp, dry mouthfeel. Nice beer, I like it.

Cloudy yellow with no head. That is one spicy mamma jamma! Rosemary, black pepper, flowers, cinnamon and mint al lin there. Complex herbal palate is fairly peppery and finishes with a distinct rosemary note. Very refreshing, almost gingery. I could drink a lot of this - have I met a gruit I don’t like yet?

Bottle. Milky yellow. Cool-looking and would have served it in a tall narrow glass if I could have. Heavily herbal beer. Lots of floral herbs like chamomile but also roots like ginger. Smells like springtime and wildflower fields and bay leaves and some tangerine in the background. Highly effervescent in a champagne-like way. Herbal and yeasty finish. Ends a little quickly but is light and drinkable. Lots of citrus, especially orange and lemon in the flavors. Unusual and unusually good.

Stemware sampler at local beer seminar. Yellow pour, not much head, ring of bubbles, at best, and no lacing. The aroma was bay leaf and floral notes. Ginger and rosemary were more detectable in the flavor. Another potpourri of scents and flavors.

Bottle pours a straw color with a decent head. The aroma is strangely perfumed, strong spices, and slightly sour. The flavor is wild, very spiced (can taste the bay leaf), ginger, lemon, and minty. the palate is thin and pretty refreshing. This is odd, but fun none the less. Wow, it really is different.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2009 Pours light yellow with a whitish internal haze. Smells like bay leaf shaving cologne. Mouthfeel is both creamy and a tad sour with fizzy carbonation. Very interesting tastes, its a sipper until I am used to it, and then it goes easier. This brewery is high quality

Strong Gentian aroma with a light amount of ginger. Hazy yellow color with a small white head. Very spicy beer menthol is dominate in the beginning fading to a biitter spice finish.
