COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

And now for something completely different...Pours a very hazy pale golden color with a thick white head that hangs around forever. Wow, you can smell the ginger from across the room. Going in for a closer...err...smell, there is also anise, pepper, rosemary, and a wonderful floral quality in the aroma. The aroma of this is just incredible. Slightly tart and lemony flavor plays with the underlying malt and anise sweetness. All of these spices play off of each other very well, I couldn’t imagine there is a more perfect ratio of these spices. The qualities of the caraway and anise really emerge in the flavor, especially as this brew warms. I imagine this is going to be a love it or hate it brew, put me down firmly in the love it camp.

My first grut, and unfortunately I can not endorse this brew. I was not a big fan of the spicy "special ingredients" that hit your nose and palate upon the sudden splash of quofffing. I would not recommend this to anyone except someone with a great palate for different tasting brews and someone willing to deviate from the norm. Bad beer.

16 oz bottle from South Bay Drugs. Pours a clear pale oily yellow color with a small fizzy white head. Nose is quite spicy with rosemary and ginger being dominate. Flavor was ginger and very different, interesting with no hops being added. Kind of almost salty and reminded me of ginger beer.

Courtesy of bu11zeye. Hazy golden with a fleeting white head. Big spice rack aromas with ginger and rosemary. Light/medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Good flavor is ginger, caraway, with other herbs and spices on a tart wheat base brew. Enjoyed this one.

Taste is very herbal with rosemary, fig and very much tea like. Light carbonation. Very strange and I am glad to have had it.
