COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Draft at BRU. Pours a murky gold with no head or lace. Spice bomb. Nose of pepper, cinnamon, ginger, anise, caraway. Medium to light body, tons of spice flavor, a bitter finish. Certainly interesting but I think one of these a lifetime will suffice.

From notes. Bottle stared at Chris’. Pours golden straw with a scant white head. Aroma is very herbal, ginger, basil. Flavor is bitter melon, ginger, perry. Strange.

500 ml bottle shared by Willrunforbeer, thanks for the share. Hazy gold color, nice flowery aroma. Lemons and spice.

Very floral nose with ginger and the bay leaves the brewer talks about on the label. Yep, rosemary as well. Very herbal. Massive dry texture and finishes with the array of spice toward the finish. Yes this is indeed a gruit that not many brewers do. Interesting.

Very cloudy light yellow. Nose is loaded with lemon and ginger. Taste is sweet, a touch of honey, dry finish. lots of ginger, some graham cracker, clean overall.

16.9 oz bottle. Aroma is extremely floral, herbal--honeysuckle, basil, licorice, ginger are what I’m smelling. Pours hazy pale yellow with a medium white head with decent retention. Taste is floral, herbal, lightly tart (lacto?), finishing very dry with quite a bit of un-hop-like bitterness that lingers. Mouthfeel is creamy, carbonation fine, body thin. Very interesting and tasty.

Pours light hazy faint yellow with a foamy head. Aromas ginger, Apple, faint anise, cloves. Flavors of wow, and ugh, with some ooo. That’s faint rosemary, leaves, slight ash tray, clove and bay leave. Weird as weird gets. Slight sour. Slight bitter dry finish. No sweetness.

pours hazy if not cloudy extra pale yellow with a small white cap, some retention and lacing. strong bay leaves aroma, astringent black tea, ginger and lemon peel, Rosemary and other bitter herbs, pink pepper, very light acidity. yeast, slightly vinous, pale wheaty base. average to moderately low carbonation, light body - never watery, fairly astringent and very spicy-herbal-peppery finish. interestingly.. unique.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy yellow with medium frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is strong dandellion and wheat. Medium mouthfeel with sweet grain, rosemary, floral, light tartness. Such a complex brew.

On tap at Paradiso Dupont. Pours a hazy gold with some thin white head. Nose of aftershave, mint, loads of spice. Like someone opened their spice cabinet and it fell into the boil... and late. Flavor follows right along, loads of fresh herbs, mint, aftershave. Drain pour, in my opinion.

Pours lightly hazy straw color with a 1-finger white head. Aroma of lemon and ginger, with an evergreen-like note. Body is light and slightly oily, with a brief, dry finish. Flavor is lemony with an evergreen note from the rosemary. Some grassy and peppery notes underneath.

Bottle. Cloudy yellow pour. White head. Aroma is peppery, lemon, eucalyptus and potpourri. Flavor is super spicy! Incense, potpourri, burns over the palate. Not my thing.
