COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Before the German Purity Law "Reinheitsgebot" of 1516 it was common practice to use any kind of different spices, herbs, fruits and other plants to provide balance to beer. Hops was not yet well known at this time. Grut bier has roots in many cultures and each culture had it’s own “special ingredients": Egyptians, Native Americans, Arabian Tribes, Gaulles, Germanic Tribes and the Vikings. This interpretation of a traditional Grut Bier is spiced with Lorbeer (Bay Leaves), Ingwer (Ginger), Kummel (Caraway), Anis (Anise), Rosemarin (Rosemarie) & Enzian (Gentian). It is brewed with water, wheat & barley malt, "pollinated wild hops" and fermented using top fermenting yeast. - Dr. Fritz Briem Historic Signature Series

Like spicy rosemary ice tea. The absence of hops makes the other flavors really stand out.

One refreshing drink with a ton of spicy fruity peppery goodness. This is like a wheat beer on steroids. Tons of floaters adding to the mouth feel. Long evolving finish that morphs into a ice-tea lemonade taste. If you like citrisy wheat beers you must try this one.

Cloudy golden yellow color with thin white head and bits of yeast floating around. Hefeweizen like aroma. Notes of ginger, lemon and coriander.

A decent beer, just a mouthful of flavor. I definitely prefer hops over this though.

Very aromatic. I thought it almost had the smell of a medicinal lemon tea. Pours hazy yellow with minimal head. A very light mouth feel. Strong Ginger flavor with a little Rosemary on the back end. No alchohol present. Drinks very easy and if very refreshing. Probably one of the most unique beers I have had.

Hazy straw with brown particulates and a persistant thin white head. Sticky medium body with medium-high carbonation.

Aroma: Strong notes of ginger, anise, menthol or eucalyptus, and something citrusy. No malt.

Taste: Ginger, eucalyptus, and lots of other spices, mild sourness, and only a hint of malt.

Tasted on 10/8/11 from a bottle shared by rustyham, thank you, Nick. Pours lightly hazy yellow with a thin white head that recedes to a thin collar of lace. The nose is spicy ginger and potpourri, with some herbal cardamom. The flavor has the same ginger, cinnamon potpourri, and herbal sage and cardamom, along with some fruity apple and grapefruit. The body is light with fizzy carbonation and a long spiced herbal finish.

500ml bottle from Discount Liquor Milwaukee. Pours a hazy, bright yellow color with a white head. Aroma is spicy, ginger, anise, maybe some of the bay leaves. Light body on the palate with fizzy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, Spicy, anise, ginger, rosemary, with a sweet, bay leaf finish. Very interesting. Refreshing, good to try onc, but not something I see myself buying on any sort of regular basis.
