(Draught at the brewpub) Fruity (grape-citrus), crispy, hoppy aroma with a hint of caramel. Amber colour, hazy and average size, thick, light brownish, slightly lasting head with excellent lacing. Fruity (citrus), crispy, bitter, malty and caramel flavour. Medium to full-bodied, slightly dry and softly carbonated palate. ’1516 NZ Victoria Hop Devil I.P.A.’ is the best Austrian brew I’ve tasted so far! Excellent!! 18/05/07

This is very similar to the American version, an American style double IPA. The hops are different, though, and it finishes a lot softer than its American cousin. I think this is even better than the original,

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2009 on tap at the brewpub on sunday night. alas, i didn’t write down the whole commercial description but the basic story was that due to a poor crop in the pacific nw last year, the brewery wasn’t able to get whole leaf cascade and thought they weren’t going to be able to brew a hop devil ipa this year. luckily they sourced some from nz thanks to someone called heidi (i think). anyways, i think everything worked out perfectly in the end. this was served in a glass chalice which emphasised its deep copper colour and steady, off-white head with large bubbles and also the heady aroma of grapefruit, pine, toffee and a whiff of passionfruit. this really bursts in your mouth with some rasping wrigley’s juicy fruit, tangy boiled lolly sweetness and an intensely bitter, grapefruit finish. i was amazed to find an ipa this impressive in austria and after a couple of glasses i would even be so bold as to say that it beat anything i tried in seattle or portland. just goes to show how many great beers are the result of happy accidents. i could go on for ages about how much i loved the brewpub, too, but i’ll save that for a review of one of their beers that i couldn’t find much to write about

This is close to my ultimate beer. An extreme IPA in the American style. The whole range of hops, giving a splendid fruitiness and a crisp dry finish. The best beer in Vienna?

The most American beer in Vienna - amber coloured, grapefruit-aroma in the nose and a very hoppy and still slightly sweetish caramel palate. Dryish aftertaste and dangerously strong at something like 6.5+ ABV

I had to stare at this one for a while and ask what the hell was going on. A very nice try but didn’t quite have the bite of the origanal. Still a very good try and went well with my schitzel.

On tap at 1516 Brau, Vienna. Amber coloured with huge head. Extremely hoppy bitter, beautifully dry and yes bitter. Loads of fragrant flowery hops with citric overtones, excellently crafted IPA. Great stuff.

Gazza (726) - Worcester, Worcestershire, ENGLAND - APR 25, 2004
Golden brew with a pure cascades aroma. Unfortunately, in my view, the beer is too heavily hopped and this makes it a bit of a difficult one to drink - beer shouldn't be hard work! Overly bitter too, and although the cascades are very prominent, they are just too heavily used for me. Very bitter and citrussy finish. (Draught at 1516, Vienna)

Geiserich (2334) - Vienna, AUSTRIA - APR 9, 2004
UPDATED: JUL 25, 2007 Typical ice-tee color, compact, creamy head, stable. Aroma is strong hoppy (Tettnanger+Cascade), fruity+light sour. Creamy flavor, velvety, very fruity hop note with decent acid. Aftertaste is medium to strong bitter, with a long dry finish. Superb beer, brewed from Bill Covaleski in Vienna!
