It’s worth a special trip to try this and to reflect on the differences between the version brewed here and the one back in the States. I’m not a big fan of Hop Devil to begin, but this was an enjoyable beer that paired well with the food. One would be hard pressed to tell a difference in the appearance between the two, although I thought on the palate that this came out maltier than the U.S. version, i.e. more caramel with bitter orange than the more hops dominated American version. A nice beer, and a nice respite from all the lagers and pilsners I had been drinking until then.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: AUG 22, 2009 Draught at the brewpub: A hazy reddish amber colour with a foamy, off-white head. Grapefruity, pungent citrus and yeasty aromas - the yeast is a bit dominant but settles after while. The taste is of fruity/resinous/piney/citrus hops, with a stable malt backbone. It has a medium body and a dry, pronounced bitter finish. Simply lovely and one of my favourites already.

spicy hop flavour, but boring after a while, to much and to mainstream, lively carbonation, good foam, dry mouthfeeling, sorry

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Growing floral hop aromatics segue into sustained oranges, resinous acrobatics all around the lean caramel malts of this perky American-style India Pale Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-Sturdy foam protects the turbid dark orange, lacing quite well.
-Carbonation is pretty frothy.
-If malt flavors were better expressed, I would deem this a world-class IPA.
-The end result is perhaps not too complex, but it is highly enjoyable.
-In this part of the world, this is a marvelously executed novelty, but on a global scale, it is "just" a very satisfying IPA.
On tap at the brewpub.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draught at 1516 Brewing Co. Vienna. Notes from July 08. Pours a beautiful reddish copper with lasting off white head. Aroma is amazing, like flowers in a pine forest and complimented with fresh citrus. After what seems like forever I finally taste the brew. The hop flavour is fantastic, the caramel malt is balanced with floral, piney and resinous hops. Mouthfeel is smooth with a dry, bitter finish. A superb brew and worthy of the number one beer in Austria.
