3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
RBESG 2012 - Day 1. Cloudy orange with a lasting off-white head. Hoppy aroma with citrus, grassy and herbal notes, along with a touch of vegetable/DMS. Sweet malty flavour with fruity hops and a decent bitter finish

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Mild ausklingender Hopfenton.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at 1516 Brau, Vienna. Amber coloured with huge head. Extremely hoppy bitter, beautifully dry and yes bitter. Loads of fragrant flowery hops with citric overtones, excellently crafted IPA. Great stuff.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap @ brewery during RBESG 2012. Hazy colorful orange appearance with an off white head. Nice lacing. Woody, herbal, lightly fruity aroma. Chewy, herbal, woody, somewhat floral, toasty flavor.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
draft at 1516 in vienna. unfiltered cloudy dark amber colored body with a frothy dark tan head. vibrant and fresh hops shows creamed melon and mandarin orange with lightly notes of key lime pie and crystalline/sugar/gummi bears. candy sweet, syrupy, cloying, too thick. caramel and honey malt seems to clash with the vibrant citrus hops. overall pretty good IPA and a gem for those americans living in vienna who crave it, but it’s a bit too weighty and chewy for my tastes.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JAN 18, 2009 My Bottom Line:
Growing floral hop aromatics segue into sustained oranges, resinous acrobatics all around the lean caramel malts of this perky American-style India Pale Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-Sturdy foam protects the turbid dark orange, lacing quite well.
-Carbonation is pretty frothy.
-If malt flavors were better expressed, I would deem this a world-class IPA.
-The end result is perhaps not too complex, but it is highly enjoyable.
-In this part of the world, this is a marvelously executed novelty, but on a global scale, it is "just" a very satisfying IPA.
On tap at the brewpub.

draught at the brewpub. Cloudy orange-copper colour, creamy white head. Full-bodied with abitter-sweet character. Lots of resiny, grassy and citrusy hops on an intensive malt base. Delicious and very moreish.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
100ml + 300ml draught. Easily the best of 7 beers enjoyed for some hours at the brewpub. No wonder it’s still the highest rated Austrian brew. Murky, brown coloured body under an off-white head. Appealing aroma of succulent fruits. Strongly hopped with cascade whole leaf hops. Filled with sappy, late oranges, pineapples and bittersweet grapefruits. The aftertaste is also bittersweet and long-lived. Almost full bodied. Cleverly made (Wien, 30.11.2007).

Comments: As I write this, this is the highest rated beer in Austria. I can imagine why. They serve it in a classy Köstritzer-like cup and it looks great in it. Dark bronze with an eternal mountainous head – find a place where hop devil looks like that in the USA. Pleasant bitterness, evolving, full of citrus, mostly aroma hops really. Very malty and much darker than the original American hop devil and I must say feeling much better. Perhaps I’m just being influenced by the low hop dose I’ve had recently, but that would also explain why it’s so highly considered. It all makes sense I tell you, were I living in Vienna, I’d want that in my glass on a regular basis.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: SEP 22, 2009 on tap at the brewpub on sunday night. alas, i didn’t write down the whole commercial description but the basic story was that due to a poor crop in the pacific nw last year, the brewery wasn’t able to get whole leaf cascade and thought they weren’t going to be able to brew a hop devil ipa this year. luckily they sourced some from nz thanks to someone called heidi (i think). anyways, i think everything worked out perfectly in the end. this was served in a glass chalice which emphasised its deep copper colour and steady, off-white head with large bubbles and also the heady aroma of grapefruit, pine, toffee and a whiff of passionfruit. this really bursts in your mouth with some rasping wrigley’s juicy fruit, tangy boiled lolly sweetness and an intensely bitter, grapefruit finish. i was amazed to find an ipa this impressive in austria and after a couple of glasses i would even be so bold as to say that it beat anything i tried in seattle or portland. just goes to show how many great beers are the result of happy accidents. i could go on for ages about how much i loved the brewpub, too, but i’ll save that for a review of one of their beers that i couldn’t find much to write about
