The most American beer in Vienna - amber coloured, grapefruit-aroma in the nose and a very hoppy and still slightly sweetish caramel palate. Dryish aftertaste and dangerously strong at something like 6.5+ ABV

UPDATED: SEP 22, 2009 on tap at the brewpub on sunday night. alas, i didn’t write down the whole commercial description but the basic story was that due to a poor crop in the pacific nw last year, the brewery wasn’t able to get whole leaf cascade and thought they weren’t going to be able to brew a hop devil ipa this year. luckily they sourced some from nz thanks to someone called heidi (i think). anyways, i think everything worked out perfectly in the end. this was served in a glass chalice which emphasised its deep copper colour and steady, off-white head with large bubbles and also the heady aroma of grapefruit, pine, toffee and a whiff of passionfruit. this really bursts in your mouth with some rasping wrigley’s juicy fruit, tangy boiled lolly sweetness and an intensely bitter, grapefruit finish. i was amazed to find an ipa this impressive in austria and after a couple of glasses i would even be so bold as to say that it beat anything i tried in seattle or portland. just goes to show how many great beers are the result of happy accidents. i could go on for ages about how much i loved the brewpub, too, but i’ll save that for a review of one of their beers that i couldn’t find much to write about

Tap at brewpub. Dark brown orange color with medium long lasting white head. Aroma of grapefruit, floral hops, tropical fruits, spices. Taste, starts sweet malty with tropical fruits, later on floral hops are coming. Nice long floral hops bitter finish. Excellent beer.

This is close to my ultimate beer. An extreme IPA in the American style. The whole range of hops, giving a splendid fruitiness and a crisp dry finish. The best beer in Vienna?

On-tap. A - Deep hazy amber-orange color with a good sized white, foamy, and creamy head. Good retention with a nice lacing left over. S - Good amount of citrus and other golden fruit along with a touch of pine. This is matched almost equally with some caramel and bready malt smells. Very well balanced aroma. T - Similar to the smell and very well balanced. Upfront there is a lot of citrus (both orange and grapefruit) along with some other golden fruit (some apple, apricot, melon, and slight peach). Then some caramel and bready malt flavors start to come out more. The flavors come together and give a sweet candied fruit taste. Toward the end, there is some pine taste that comes out. No real bitterness, and a good amount of sweetness, even though there is a good amount of the hop flavors. M - Medium body with average carbonation. Smooth and coats the mouth and slightly drying. D - Very good drinkability. A lot of hop flavors, and pretty well balanced (slightly more sweet/malt taste). Very tasty beer that I enjoyed drinking. Notes: Very good IPA that is very tasty. Had it at the Känguruh Pub, and it was a very nice surprise in Wien.

Draught at 1516 Brewing Co. Vienna. Notes from July 08. Pours a beautiful reddish copper with lasting off white head. Aroma is amazing, like flowers in a pine forest and complimented with fresh citrus. After what seems like forever I finally taste the brew. The hop flavour is fantastic, the caramel malt is balanced with floral, piney and resinous hops. Mouthfeel is smooth with a dry, bitter finish. A superb brew and worthy of the number one beer in Austria.

Draught at the pub. Deep ambery-orange color with hazy appearance. Leaf hoppy, resinous grapfruit aroma along with rough yeasty (in a good way), bready character. The flavor is full of cascade hoppy fruitiness. It’s very grapefruity indeed. Despite the 65 IBU, it’s not bitter at all. The main mouthfeel is sweet malty, and full of resinous hops. Full bodied with creamy texture and thick, lacing head. I could drink it as an every day-drink. Nice and authentic introduction to the style of this beer for eastern european beer lovers like me.

UPDATED: JUL 25, 2007 Typical ice-tee color, compact, creamy head, stable. Aroma is strong hoppy (Tettnanger+Cascade), fruity+light sour. Creamy flavor, velvety, very fruity hop note with decent acid. Aftertaste is medium to strong bitter, with a long dry finish. Superb beer, brewed from Bill Covaleski in Vienna!

On tap at 1516 Brau, Vienna. Amber coloured with huge head. Extremely hoppy bitter, beautifully dry and yes bitter. Loads of fragrant flowery hops with citric overtones, excellently crafted IPA. Great stuff.
