4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 danielst (247) - Vienna, AUSTRIA - MAY 14, 2009
UPDATED: AUG 22, 2009 Draught at the brewpub: A hazy reddish amber colour with a foamy, off-white head. Grapefruity, pungent citrus and yeasty aromas - the yeast is a bit dominant but settles after while. The taste is of fruity/resinous/piney/citrus hops, with a stable malt backbone. It has a medium body and a dry, pronounced bitter finish. Simply lovely and one of my favourites already.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Nickls (1659) - SE DC, Washington DC, USA - MAY 10, 2010
(Old BA rate - tap)
Poured with a two-finger thick slightly egg shell colored head...pretty frothy and left chunky lacing throughout the sample. Some bready/sweet maltiness followed by very prominant citric and cedary hop aromas. Powerfully bitter, but balance well. Great hop bitterness comes over the palate first and it is a bit earthy, citruisy, and piney at different points. Very nice complexity for the style. Good malt balance, but doesn’t come close to rivaling the hops. Medium MF, muted carbonation and more than coats the palate. Pretty high drinkability, nice flavors along with the high hop factor. A little less aggressive than it’s US namesake. Overall, pretty fantastic brew and slightly more complex that Victory’s Hopdevil, though less assertive.

Comments: As I write this, this is the highest rated beer in Austria. I can imagine why. They serve it in a classy Köstritzer-like cup and it looks great in it. Dark bronze with an eternal mountainous head – find a place where hop devil looks like that in the USA. Pleasant bitterness, evolving, full of citrus, mostly aroma hops really. Very malty and much darker than the original American hop devil and I must say feeling much better. Perhaps I’m just being influenced by the low hop dose I’ve had recently, but that would also explain why it’s so highly considered. It all makes sense I tell you, were I living in Vienna, I’d want that in my glass on a regular basis.

Draught.
Hazy orange red coloured with a creamy off white head.
Aroma of malts, fruits, hops and grape fruits.
Fruity flavour of hops, grass, pine needles and grape fruits.
Dry hoppy finish of grass.
Very nice IPA, I prefer the austrian edition of the hop devil rather than the american.

Tap @ 1516 Brewing Company, Vienna.
Pours nice hazy, deep amber with a big, staying, frothy/creamy off-white head. Suplime aroma, lots of hops, pine, grapefruit, citrus and flowers. Good caramel maltiness behind it. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has soft caramel, wonderful dryness in the finish. Truly well-balanced beer.

On tap; an amazing IPA in the heart of Europe. This was an awesome change from all the German beers. Color was orange with a foamy head, just like the picture. Aroma of citrus and flowers. Flavor was great. I write "whole leaf" for some reason as well as hoppy and citrus. Just a yummy beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 downender (5191) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - OCT 4, 2008
On tap at the brewpub. Appealing reddish-amber in colour with a decent white head. Aroma of pine resin, citrus hops, oranges and a touch of red fruit sweetness. Full mouth feel, with pine hop flavours coating the mouth, accompanied by caramel, red currants, grapefruit, a slight yeastiness and a powerful dry finish. The alcohol was extremely well hidden - I didn’t notice it until I woke up the following morning with a headache. Great stuff.
