(by Jürgen Hübchen) Saphir is a new Breed of Hops, so far exclusively used by “Becks” Brewery. We managed to get a few Kilos, and since the only true Pilsener Beers come from Northern Germany, we asked our Berlin born, Hamburg Native Master Brewer Jürgen Hübchen to brew a Pils like it once was supposed to be brewed. Dry & Bitter, just how we like our women. Nowadays German ”Pils” Brews are just underhopped Lagers. Most of them. Some shouldnt even be labeled as “Pils”. So if you do not like Dry & Bitter Beers, order Apple Juice. Anyway, this is a true Pils hopped with Saphir. Malts: Pilsener Malt, flaked Rice, Wheatmalt Hops: Northern Brewer, Nugget, Saphir

Hazy light blond color. Light cereals aroma. Dry mouthfeel, dry malt flavor, strong bitterness. Not impressive.

Draught @ 1516. Very slightly hazy pale gold with small head. Little aroma - slightly malty and hoppy. Light body with frothy medium carbonation. The flavour has a grassy start with a metallic bitter finish. An interesting, rather challenging, pils.

On tap a few weeks back. Color was a clear straw gold with a foamy head. Aroma of bread, yest and earth. Flavor was the same, with a decent amount of hops, but not a whole lot of great flavor in the finish. Solid overall though.

Draught at the brewpub: Light yelow color, light hazy color, foamy head. Fruity flavor with notes of citrus, fruity and bitter hops. Refreshing and astringent, dry bitter finish. Fruity citrus aroma, remarkable hop note with notes of hay and fresh lemon juice. Quite nice pils but somewhat unbalanced.
