COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Poured from bottle to glass. Hazy straw hue with fizzy white head that dissipated. Aroma is straw, lactic, corn, peach. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium light body and sharp carbonation. Taste is dry with a tart following. Overall this is a decent brew.

On tap at Right Proper, DC. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a spongy white head that settled to moderate lacing. Aroma is tangy fruit, slight banana and light citrus. Flavor is citrus and yeast tartness. Thin to medium body, active carbonation, and tart finish. From notes 9/27/14.

Poured into lager glass as I don’t own a bowl glass. It’s yellow with haze and a big white head that dissipates quickly to the sides of glass. Starts bubbley and seems to go flat but there is plenty of co2 here. It is light bodied. Aroma is sour lemon and wheat. Taste is lemon, wheat, hay. Sour note but in no way overwhelming turns a bit sweet in the early sip with a lemon aftertaste. Sharp and crisp and a refresher for sure. Enjoyed but I wish I had it on a hot summer day as opposed to this cool fall day but very nice.

"bottle is the same as the pic, as is the name, but it says 5% lite funk fruit and wheat on the nose. not the best looking beer - yellow as expected with a bubbly white head that disappears quick, then it looks flat, though it’s not, with some floaties. light prickly feel fits the style. flavor of light lemon, a little sour and a little cereal sweetness. not bad, but not up to par with Hottenroth."

Purchased at Liquor Shed. A hazy straw yellow pour with 3 fingers of foam. It smells earthy, with lemon citrus that imparts both tart and spicy notes. Lemony, yeasty, peppery, very dry on the palate. Light body with perhaps too much co2. This is very nice.

Pour is bright hazed yellow with a white head. Nose has a fair bit of dirty grain, faint dusty brett, decent lacto, strong lemon. Taste is a bit sweeter, grain is there but a little messier, lacto comes in mid palate, quite a bit of lemon and gets a bit sweet. Light body, a touch syrupy, moderate carb, dry finish.

Bronzed gold color with a dense white ring. Light fruity nose. Light tart, wheat flavor with a full body backing. Lively, fruity finish with a dense wheat taste aired out by some tart yeastiness. Very well presented on draught.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours a hazy yellow with a white head. Taste tart, citrus, sweet. I thought this was good. I would drink this again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

8 oz. on tap at Bull McCabe’s in Durham. Lightly hazy straw color with a lasting film of cream. Nose is tart cherry, wheat, and lemony bread yeast. Taste is the same mix with a touch of earthy funk. Light body is dry and has medium carbonation.

Crisp and refreshing with some sour cherry, watermelon, and slight grapefruit flavor. Has a yeasty smell. Nice carbonation that helps the sour not linger. Would put back a few of these on a summer day.
