COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Couple bottles before a show at the Mann. Pours a cloudy yellow with fluffy white head and lace. Nose of lactic acid, lemon peel, wheat. Light bodied, moderately tart. Great beer for a hot summer day.

Bottle. Pours hazy straw colored yellow with a thick foamy white head. Aroma is lactic sourness, lots of citrus and a nice bit of funky yeast. Taste is bright and tart on the palate, with notes of citrus and wheat and a lovely balanced sourness that is slightly less than mouth puckering. Finish is clean and full of citrus zest and a bit of wheat. This hits all the right notes. Really lovely stuff.

Looks like lemonade, hazy yellow with a small head. The aroma is sour with some lemon and funk. Funky flavor too, with a bit of sweet malt and a bit of the lemon. Very smooth and refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is grapefruit, wheat, you can smell the sourness that you’ll later discover upon your first sip. Tastes doughy, yeasty, some grass and citrus. Medium to heavy sourness.

A - Pours a hazy golden blond, very active champagne like bubbles, 1 finger of bright white head. S - Tart apples, damp wheat, honey sweetness, has a lactic acidity aroma, some floral notes in the background. T - Bright lemon tartness, pepper, green apple and grape skins, faint banana, salty, wheat malt. The salty tartness wraps everything up while still letting the malt shine. Finishes tart and dry. M - Tart, light body, seltzer like carbonation, dry clean finish. This beer provides a very balanced tartness. It’s not sour but tart enough to wake up the palate. Very clean flavors and an excellent palate cleanser when tasting several big beers. This is super clean, crisp, and refreshing. Serving type: bottle 03-30-2012
