Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

It poured a hazy golden color with a white head. The aroma was of lemon, dough and slight funky spices. The taste was of lemon, lacto, dough and tart with some light funkiness. Decent.

Flaska från Saveur Biére. Smak och doft av humle, citrus, vete, citron, mjölksyrabakterier med toner av jord och grön banan. Frisk, fruktig, syrlig med fin beska. Mycket gott!

Bottle: Translucent, bright-golden & sunshine yellow body; super cloudy & topped with a spritzy, foamy white head that is gone in moments. Aroma of tart apples, lemons, light lactic acidity, German yeast, clove, a touch of spice, & some dusty wheat. Flavor is very effervescent & light. Wheat, musk, lemon-lime zest, a touch of apple, lemon, & some very sharp carbonation to close things out. Super lofty. Somewhat mineral-ish with a hint of cereal grain alongside the wheat body.

Bottle on 25/7/14 Pale golden with white, big head that lasting and lacing beautifully. It definitely has wheat!! Aroma is phenolic(light clove), earthy, light tartness, sweet hay, spicy wheat. Reminds me of a hefe but less intense and a bit more complex. Flavor is light sweet and has just a hint of tartness, wheaty, sourdoughy, nice light bread crust. Aftertaste is tart, some earthy tones from the hops, light salinity. Generally my first try of a Berliner Weisse that is like a soured Weiss, meaning it’s got the phenolic and doughy character but with lactic tartness. No bret character or funkiness what so ever.

Pours cloudy lemon yellow with enormous white head, and both are indicators of what’s to come. When the head subsides, the nose is lemon, dough and yeast. On the palate, the dough adds a sweet touch, but the overwhelming flavor is the refreshing lemon, which is tart but not mouth-puckering. The other element is the pillowy carbonation, which remains even as the head goes. This was bottled in November 2014 and perhaps needs a bit more time to develop. As it is, this is a very straightforward brew, ideal for a summer’s day in the beer garden, but not geared toward late winter.

Cloudy yellow with 2-inches of medium-coarse cream-colored head, moderate rate of decay. Aroma is tart hay, sour-wheat dough, a touch of fake-grape flavored candy, hint of ground of candy cigarettes. Body is light-medium-light, watery, a touch of starchiness, carbonation is big with a strong burn and medium coarseness. Flavor is a very consumable tart grain, hints of lemon and pound cake. Tartness is incredibly clean certainly no acetic, but also almost no indications of the usual lactic signatures. A great Berliner, very yummy, top-notch body. The abv is a bit on the high side for the style, but otherwise a go-to.
