COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Bonus beer at BJCP study group, 3 oz pour

Aroma: sour, tad funkiness

Appearance: yellow, pale, white head

Taste: Sour

Palate: light body, average carbonation

Overall: A really great Berliner Weisse. Textbook example. Light and effervescent. Sour, but not overly done. Nice balance yet complex with some fruit and tartiness. One that I’ll definitely buy, if I see the bottle.

Pint 9 bottle poured a slightly cloudy yellow aroma of straw citrus and funk. Love this beer. Tart and dour one the tongue but not over powering. Nice fruit tartness throughout. Excellent example of the style.

Pours straw with bubbly head. Nose is wheat, lemon, tart. Taste matches, very bubbly, a bit tart, lemon, lot of hefe character. Like a cross between a hefe and a gose. Good.

From the bottle. First pour is clear apple-juice appearance, turning cloudy and straw colored by the second. Aroma is lemony tartness. Great carbonation. Head is fluffy white and fine, with minimal lacing. Taste is tart with lemon balanced by the wheat/malt sweetness. Like a clean lager, light hefeweiss, and mild sour rolled into one. Very crisp, balanced, and delicious.

C’est comme un Hefeweisse mais en version acide. L’acidité est très modéré, petite arôme de banane. Bien!

BOD 7/25/14. Pours a clear golden. Massive World Class head volume, retention and lacing. Light, but nice, nose of tart lemon, coupled with a touch of vinegar and funk, over biscuit. Almost light medium body with just a hint of creaminess over a smooth texture. Well carbonated with effervescence from the onset. The outstanding flavor profile is reasonably intense, not very complex but is perfectly balanced and allows the effervescence to showcase the flavor. It begins with a burst of tart lemon that coats the tongue until the middle where a light biscuit sweetness creeps in underneath. Hops make a slightly bitter appearance as the middle ends. The finish is slightly sour at first, then fades into a slight tart sweetness and finishes dry.

Bottle from HappyHoppy @ home. Color: pale hazy blond beer with small carbonation and small white foam. Smell: good grassy beer with banana and cloves. Taste: really nice and fresh sensation, grassy and hoppy taste with good sour notes. Great banana and lactic sensation. Yoghurt notes. Aftertaste: grassy and lemon with banana finish.

Pours a very cloudy straw with a white head. Looks like carbonated grapefruit juice. Aroma is bright and fresh: hay, citrus, basement aromas, some clove. Way out of balance to the sour. Clean fresh palate. Highly carbonated. Refreshing.
