COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Pours a cloudy yellow with a thin white head. Smells lactic and sour with some citrussy elements and hints of biscuits. Taste is moderately sour with tart lemony qualities being the dominant in this beer. Very well done interpretation of this rare style.

Bottle: Big wheaty aroma with lemon, clove, and a touch of grass. It pours a cloudy yellow with a moderate white head that lasts a minute or so. The flavor has lots of mildly sour lemon up front with some faint banana. The finish is lightly acidic along with some grassy hops and a touch of smoke. The mouthfeel is somewhat thin and soft but the carbonation is rather lively, but not prickly. I see myself drinking a lot of this during the summer. Very tastey and refreshing.

500mL, no date, though I think this is a relatively new beer, so I’ll say 2007. Looks kinad like a wit--cloudy straw with a one finger fading white head. Smells like a hefe with more pronounced lemon and plain sourness, a bit musty. There is a light bitter character that I can’t place. Zowee! Pretty tart up front with some old yeast towards the finish. In between I got some herbal hay, very light bananas, lemon, and something stale. Moderate carbonation with a light to medium body, leaning towards lighter. This definitely grows on you by the end of the bottle. It’s hard to get used to this style, but this is definitely a very good effort. Refreshing, but not something I could drink everyday.

Bottle, thanks to mgumby10. Only my second foray into the style. Pours hazy yellow on the edges, and orange in the middle with a fizzy, tall off-white head. Aroma is tart with notes of spicy wild yeast, and wet hay. Flavor is tart lemon, with enough dough, clove, and malty sweet to back it up. Mouthfeel is dry and crisp, a bit thin, witha bit of a yeast swell in the middle, and then the clean tart finish.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2007 Bottle. Creamy yellow opaque appearance, doesn’t have a huge head, but still has a decent looking creamy texture white film. Pungent, inviting aroma, yeast-forward with an abundance of lactic acid... spicy and peppery on the nose. Taste is tingling and fizzy up front, spicy yeast initially tasted and then turning more semi-sweet and semi-sour, with wheat and lactose as the dominant flavors. It’s a really refreshing and tasty beer in a style I haven’t sampled much.

In my opinion, if there were to be a pyramid hierarchy of beer flavors, sour would be at the top. I think sour takes the longest to acquire a taste for, and can be one of the most sublime. As such, I really liked this beer. This beer poured a hazy gold/straw color with lots of fluffy head. Aroma was light clove and sourness. Flavor was also a blend of sour and cloviness. I felt this beer was less sour than Berliner Kindl Weiss. I had this beer with a meal, and I noticed a pleasing fruitiness as the beer warmed which was really a nice complement to my meal. Mouthfeel was soft and champagne-like. I really thought highly of this beer.

This pours a cloudy, pale yellow body with a HUMONGOUS fizzy head that does little of any lacing. The aroma is kind of funky, an underlying bread dough with bitter grasses, lemon, and old yeast. Light and well carbonated, its funkiness continues into the flavor. Along with tastes reflecting the aroma, it has some hand soap, overly ripe bananas, peppery spices, and a lactic sourness. Interesting, refreshing, and repeatable.

Bottle at Winking Lizard a while back but it wasn’t here to rate and i wasn’t sure where to add it. Poures pale golden with a chill haze ans a short white head. Aromas of lemon, and straw. Flavor is lemony, some clove, and yeast. Palate is crisp and clean but quite tart. A fair amount of carbonation too.. Interesting and unique.

50cL bottle. Pours a hazy golden-yellow color; significant white head with great lacing. Aroma is similar to a Belgian wit with a tart character: bready, cloves, tart lemon (reminds me a bit of my lemony dish soap). Medium mouthfeel: plenty of lemony tartness upfront, evening out to a light wit-style backdrop of bread, spice and banana: like a refreshing (this is my first Berliner Weisse, fyi) Belgian wit with brett (similar to Leelanau Whaleback White...). Great for a warm day outside (I should go test this). Medium, doughy and lemony finish.
