COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Rating 1084, bottle purchased from Sams in Downers Grove, Illinois. Bright golden with a large white foamy crisp head with good carbonation. The nose is sharp citrus and grains. Taste has just a hint of yeast with lots of citrus and pepper. Refreshing and overall a good treat. Worth the price.

Bottle at WWBA ’12 Brooklyn. Slight bubble gum and lemon in the flavor. Minimal tartness. Heavy carbonation. Odd finish of artificial malt sweetness, similar to Whoppers candy.

My first berliner style beer. Highly carbed murky light yellow with a foamy head that stays long given the carbonation pushing up more bubbles. Aromas are sweet of banana, yeasty, spice. Flavors of light sour cider, yeasty, light hay. Sour, refreshing, soda like carbonation, aged wood like ester aftertaste, tart, lightly acidic. Would so be an interesting beer for aging, and it tastes like it already has been for at least a couple of years.

Absolutely delicious. Cloudy gold with a disappaiting head. Brett/yeast on the nose. Medium bodied with high carbonation, this enters the palate much like a Flanders sour, but shows the grainy Weisse components on the finish. Amazing brew!

Bottle pours slightly hazy pale yellow with huge white head that faded slowly. Aroma acidy citrus. Taste slightly sour tart lemon with funk. palate light but goes well with the style. Finish no hops, mild tartness, acidity and funk.

Bottle. Pours pale golden yellow color with a soft white soapy head that dissipates to fizzy bubbles in the center of the glass and a thin ring around glass. Aroma has lemon cider like scents with tart funky bread and yeast. Taste is light tartness bread and lemon cider mixed with malt and yeast. Palate is medium and shows full carbonation and finishes dry. Drinks well!

500 ml bottle into imperial pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly cloudy golden straw color with a 1 finger foamy white head with poor retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. No glass lacing, and a good amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of big tart lemon, apple, pear, grape, grass, hay, cherry, and yeast spices. Fantastic aromas here, with good acidity and balance. Smells a lot like a dry cider. Taste of tart apple, pear, grape, lemon, pepper, grass, hay, yeast spices, and slight funk. Fairly dry on the finish; but there are some lingering notes of apple, pear, hay, grass, and yeast spices on the finish for a bit. Great balance of flavors with a nice tart/sweet balance. Medium-high carbonation and fairly light bodied; with an extremely smooth and crisp mouthfeel. Alcohol is completely hidden at 5%, with no warming present at all as expected. Overall this is a fantastic Berliner weissbier. Fantastic flavor balance, with a nice amount of flavors. Very drinkable and highly enjoyable.

This poured a lighter yellow color with a white head. Aroma was light hay, some lemons and grain. Flavor was a bit grainy, lemon and citrus notes and some grassy hops, and some sourdough bread. Nice stuff.

Pours yellow clear with a big white frothy head that fades to a film/ring. Nose immediately fruity and soooo funky! Faint malt notes but still just intense fruityness, complex funkiness and some tartness stands out. Flavor is intense funky tropical fruit and sharp but very clean lactic sourness. Flavor is intense and full but after you swallow it is gone completely and extremely dry. Palate is thin and light but crisp, dry, and sparkling. This one was amazing. Why have I not had it before?
