COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

joet, when did we drink this? Pretty sure this one was yours...found an old sticky note so here goes: From bottle, this beer displays honey dew and tropical fruits on the nose, after pouring a burnished yellow and holding a white thin halo. It is hazy in the glass, with rising columns of bubbles. It’s puckery on the palate, saline, then oily: satisfying to the palate while lean in body, with notes of mandarin orange, salt, mineral, wheat tang. Finishes dry, with hints of banana and tin.

8 oz. on tap at Bull McCabe’s in Durham. Lightly hazy straw color with a lasting film of cream. Nose is tart cherry, wheat, and lemony bread yeast. Taste is the same mix with a touch of earthy funk. Light body is dry and has medium carbonation.

Crisp and refreshing with some sour cherry, watermelon, and slight grapefruit flavor. Has a yeasty smell. Nice carbonation that helps the sour not linger. Would put back a few of these on a summer day.

500mL bottle, pours a hazy yellow / blonde with a medium white head. Aroma is full of hay and wheat, with a touch of citrus - smells more like a dry wit beer or something. Flavour is mildly tart, very wheaty and dry, with loads of citrus, hay, and a very light lemon tang. Very well-balanced, with a dry mouthfeel and a lightly tart finish. Very solid but generic Berliner.

From a 1 Pint 9 FL.OZ Bottle. Poured a crisp golden yellow with nice white head that dissipates quickly. I smell cherries, malt, lemon and wheat. I taste all the same, almost like sour. Excellent!

Fresh bottle. Pours cloudy/opaque faint yellow with tall head, quickly fades. Lemon and grain, cheese rind in the nose. Those traits also found in the flavor along with some italian bread. Big, welcome wheat punch here too.

500ml bottle pours hazy semi-clear pale yellow with small head that fades immediately. Nose is full of earthy grain, cereal, corn flake, hay, wheat, soft lacto lemon citrus. Taste is bright with crisp cutting balanced lacto acidity, some juicy lemon and fruit notes up front and a mix of rustic whole grains, cheerio, and cereal on the tail end. Fantastic!

The beer pours light golden with a large head. The head does quickly dissipate. A strong cherry tart aroma with some yeast elements. The is a tart taste with fruit elements with the most apparent being cherry. It has a tart finish which is crisp and dry as well.

500 ml bottle. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a large, frothy, long lasting, white head that laces nicely. Sweet aroma of fruit, citrus, wheat and malt with a sour, acidic note. Flavour is sweet and sour with citrus, malt and yeast with a dry finish. Medium body with a watery texture and soft carbonation.

On tap at Wurstkuche in Los Angeles. Pours with a thick head and hazy straw color. Smell is of lactic funk, cherries and sweet malt. Taste is of sour cherries, sweet malt with a dry, tannic finish. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Overall, a very sessionable and refreshing Weissbeer.

16 oz. bottle poured to a weissebier bowl at Lunar Brewing Co., displaying a clear & bright golden color, with a presentable layer of white foam that quickly diminished to a ring & film, and left some fleeting spots of lacing on the glass. The nose was quite tart, fruity, lemon & orange, with a touch of Brett. Light bodied with spritzy effervescence, the taste retained a bit of yeastiness, and was very lacto-astringent, dry, and palate cleansing, but not out of control. Very flavorful with or without syrup.
