Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt.The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

The beer is moderately malty with a light bread aroma. The beer also smells a bit like hay mixed with some citrus fruit juice, mainly lemon. It pours with an average white head that is white in color. The initial flavor is moderately sweet and finishes sour. It is light according to the palate with a dry texture and the carbonation is fizzy. The finish feel of this beer is a little watery.

Pours bright light orange with a two finger white head with nice lacing. Aroma is of tart fruits, wheat bread, funkyness, salt, lemonade, and overly ripe fruits. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and a dry, sour, long finish. Overall, a very nice Berliner that super refreshing and drinkable.

Bottle. Not real familiar with this style, better than I thought it would be. Gold in color with a large, explosive head that slowly dissolved into a slightly irregular head. Aroma was slightly fruity with a lactic acid note. Taste was not as sour as you would imagine. Taste was almost a tart wine taste. Not bad.

Bottled 02.10.14 Straw, pale yellow hue. Strong, musty, apple acidic aroma on pour. Fizzy white head. Adequate retention. Lemon warhead, aroma of an apple cider. First half drinks like a cider, then the a creamy maltiness pokes out near the end. Mostly sour on the lips. Mouthfeel is heavy on carbonation, but no astringent bite. A bit bland in taste, papery (not oxidized though), finish very dry like a vernors soda. 4 years ago I would have thought this to be unique, now I’m bored. Props to staying to the style.

Aroma: wheat, citrus--lemon, mineral, yeast. Palate: lively carbonation, tart yet smooth. Flavor: tart, dilute lemon, wheat, mineral. Finishes crisp, dry and tart.

Pale yellow, explosive carbonation, sustaining head over 2 fingers. Nose is light wheat. Little sweet. Middle is mild citrus sourness, light kilned grain. Finish is still sweet, but with a sour smile. Refreshing beer.

Draft at Mekong. Pours golden with a thin white head. Not much lacing in the glass. A slight hint of sourness on the nose. A bit of tartness on the tongue but it feels pretty faint. Finished clean. A lot more subdued and laid back then I was hoping for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
