COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Created by Dr. Fritz Briem of Doemens Institute, brewed by Weihenstephan & Doemens (ed: Weihenstephan denies this), “1809” is a very traditional interpretation of the “Berliner Style” Weisse with an intense blend of lactic tartness and complex fruitiness. It is bottle-conditioned, unfiltered and unpasteurized. "1809" will age beautifully in a dark and cool location. Its complex fruitiness and tartness will most likely develop in quite astonishing ways. “1809” is fermented in traditional open fermenters and horizontal lager tanks. The applied mashing regime is a single step decoction mash with 50 % wheat malt. The total amount of hops is added to the mash so that isomerisation takes place in the decocotion part of the mash. The wort is not boiled but only heated up to boiling temperature and then transferred to the open fermenters and pitched with yeast and lactic acid bacteria (isolated from malt) at 18 °C (64°F).

Great example of this style. I picked up this bottle at my local bottle shop. A nice balance of the lactic acid with a hint of wheat sweetness to balance. Wonderful on a hot day.

Bottle pour..quite large head that leaves an ample wave of heavy foam..medium light yellow color..slight haze..active carbonation to start..nose of lemon zest..tart..funk characteristics..taste is quite pleasant on a hot day..refreshing..zesty lemon/lime soaked cherry lingers with just the right amount of staying power..very tasty and will definitely be picking up more when spotted next time..

Pours a slightly hazy straw gold with a thick white head and some lacing. It has a light aroma of yeast, some light malt, and a small amount of sourness. The flavor is light, with some biscuit and light malt, with a sour middle and slightly crisp aftertaste over a light and fizzy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle at HOTB. Watery funky nose with apricot and pear nectar notes, light Brett funk. pale straw clear with foamy white lacing head. Medium-light body with medium carbonation. Medium tart beer with light sour-funk. Notes of pear and apricots. Tart but not as sour as other Berliner Weisses I’ve tried. Light, refreshing, and overall, a little watery.

2012 bottle to a snifter. Hazy straw yellow with fizzy white head. Tart, sour barnyard smell. Taste is perfectly balanced between tart, sour, and sweet. Very carbonated and the tiny bubbles explode in your mouth with every drink. Refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2012 bottle poured into a tulip glass. A: A hazy faded yellow with an active that fizzes up when poured but disappears rather quickly, leaving minimal lacing. S: Aroma is tart with smells of sour grape skins, a mustiness and some funk. T: Slightly tart lemon flavor first, then sourness concentrates mid palate. Musty and funky tastes appear after sour and then everything fades away and your left with a clean, dry palate. M: Mouthfeel is light and crisp and body is slick with a high carbonation that scrubs everything away helping to make the beer finish dry. O: Very refreshing and relatively tame sour beer. Good summer beer when you're craving something other than the traditional bitter from an IPA. ---Jeremy H
