3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Gold pour with a white smear. Aroma is apple with a very, very slight hint of brandy, if you really inhale deeply. Maybe a touch of oak too. Med body. First flavor is tannic wood and apple skin, but there does seem to be some honey. Why do people put honey in otherwise good stuff? It does have a woody tannic note, and there’s still a light brandy aspect, but that is somewhat spoiled by the honey. Recommendation: No honey and more time with the wood. If it wasn’t for the high ABV, I’d be more negative.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured from bottle to glass. Crystal clear straw hue with fizzy carbonation. Aroma is green apple, sugar, wood, acetic. Mouthfeel is nice with a light body and lighter carbonation. Feels a bit slick. Taste is a mixture of sweet and acidic initially with a slight astringent bitterness in the following and a tart ethanol finish. Overall this is a really nice cider. Tart and semi dry.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 8, 2014 Bottle. Mild aroma, strong carbonation. Taste is on the dry side, but some balancing sweet flavor in the background. Seems basic, and maybe this batch isn’t as interesting as what I had last year. I see not reason to try it again.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a clear light gold. Aroma is sweet apple and some wood. Taste is tart green apples up front, into a sticky bitterness in the end. Redeeming quality is the not-so-obvious ABV and overall drinkability.

2.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Bottle. Filtered gold with a thin layer of a head. Unpleasant malic acid and chemical cleaner and spoiled cream soda aroma with some the apples coming through like an artificially flavored soda. Medium light body, fizzy / gassy carbonation, chewy, sugary and sweet finish with high acid and a soda water calcium quality. Boozy and unpalatable.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle from Made in Oregon.
Clear, pale gold body. Pretty sizable, lingering head for a cider.
Smells of pears, sharp florals, handsoap. Brown sugar. All too familiar Woodchuck-like apple scent on the back.
Taste upfront is green, tart, acidy cider apples. The brandy slides on thick about halfway through. Carbonation dies & this heavy, woody caramel is just shellacked onto the back of your tongue. Light, prickly carbonation. Returning acid. Oxidized, grainy, vanilla finish.
This was probably an okay cider before the wood hit it. Bad Apple. Bad!

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Yellow with a few white bubbles. The aroma has some sweet apples. The flavor is similar with a hint of tartness. I don’t get any real oak notes from the barrel aging, but I had no idea that this was so high in alcohol; it tastes like it is about 5%. Remarkable a cider of this strength tasted like it did.
