On tap at the brewpub. No clove, banana, or other spicy/fruity phenols to suggest the presence of weizen yeast. Malty aromas of crusty bread and gentle caramel reach the nose. Hazy caramel amber coloring with a quickly dissipating head of creamy off-white. Medium light bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel with a dry, sharp finish. This has to be a lager, which essentially ruins the beer for me. Clean flavors, but simple and lacking any depth. A bit over-attenuated as well, leading to an astringent finish. Not much wheat character either, as a nutty malt character dominates the flavor until a parching lagery finish puckers up the palate. Not to style; I’ve actually contemplated thoughts of trying to make a dark wheat lager, but seeing how there isn’t anything wrong with this practice-wise, I couldn’t even begin to where to think to improve on this. A classic example of how important the right yeast can be to result in a pleasurable final product.
