Ale brewed with fennel seed, chia seed, and pink peppercorns - with mission figs added. In the 1700s and 1800s, missionaries and Native Americans grew a variety of crops along the El Camino Real. Apart from the famous mission grapes, mission figs, barley, and olives, fennel and chia were also grown... (The brewers) tried to recapture some of the historic flavors of the old Camino Real by brewing this beer...

Dark, dark cherry color with a tall light brown colored head. Hops dominate the aromas with some minor darker malt nuances in the background. Fairly light in feel. Light sweet licorice in the front, not as much of a turn off as usual for me, but still not real high on my list of pleasantries. Middle has a mix of red vines and darker malt. Finish gets darker, with some roastiness and ash working their way in. Some blueberries seem to work in as well. Young, perhaps; or perhaps just not quite balanced. There are parts I really like followed by some, not so much. 2/10

"a big beer with a flavor and aroma profile resembling a strong schwarz (i see your shawarz is as big...). anyway. chocolate and hops in the aroma. medium to full bodied. you can taste the sweetness on the figs and a touch of the pepper, but while i love all the parts, the final product is a little bit of a muddled beer. slightly too aggressive to be great, and while still good, one of my least favorite stone beers. maybe it’ll grow on me...i started out not caring much for it, and liked it by the end..."

Bottle shared by Bacterial! Very dark brown caramel pour, light ring of lasting carbonation and an aroma of hops and roasty nuts. Flavor is chocolate, fennel, hints of licorice, and finished with some sweet raising. Interesting (but good) beer!

Dark brown pour with just a slight tan head. Thin, reddish hue at the edges of the liquid. Spices, malt and lots going on in the nose. Nice taste, lots of stuff going on with a slightly sweet and chocolate bitter finish.

12/20/2010: Stone El Camino Unreal Black Ale... Aroma: Rich, caramelized malts; citrus hard candy. Appearance: Deep, dark brown; 2-finger brown head; lattice-like lacing. Flavor: Dry, roasty malts; pine/spruce hops; slightly dry, roasty char finish; subtle black peppercorns. Palate: Medium-full body; smooth; not sticky. Overall: Nice brew; I like the hop character.

1/27/2011: 21st Amendment/Firestone Walker/Stone El Camino (Un)real Black Ale... Aroma: Yeasty and roasty chocolate; mineral characteristic; sharp leafy hops. Appearance: Near black color, opaque; lasting, foamy brown-colored head. Flavor: Dry chocolate; notes of roasted malt and coffee; oily citrusy hops (tangelo) that open up as the beer breathes; Palate: Medium to medium-full body; VERY smooth and creamy; calm mouthfeel. Overall: Very solid; I like the dark roasty flavors melded with the citrus hoppiness.

16 fl. oz. pint (draught) at Dutch’s in Cincinnati, Ohio.
