Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

Canned on 02/04/14. Agressive pour. Nice dark, black color with a big tan creamy head. lots of awesome lacing. Aroma is citrus, orange, grapefruit with a very sligtht bit of maltiness at the end. Taste is big roasted coffee flavor right up front, that settles down in the middle before dissolving into a big hop flavor. Not as balanced as some black IPAs Iíve had but it delivers a really nice hoppiness that I expect from a black IPA. Firestoneís Wookey Jack is better but this is still very good. Would definitely buy again.

Can. Piney roasted malt aroma with dark chocolate. Taste is very balanced. Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, caramel, pine, citrus and some hop bitterness. Very good thick mouthfeel. Very good black ipa, one of the top on my list.

Draft at 21A in SF. Nose is piney with some chocolate and coffee notes. Deep dark brown with red highlights. Medium sized white head. Taste is a chocolate hop cone. I really donít like black IPAs and this is pretty decent. A lightly roasted character but more dark chocolate and well played hop/dark malt interaction.

Grapefruit, pine, caramel sweetness, burnt sugar and alcohol in the aroma. It is brown not black, but I think itís due to brewers not wanting too much of that dark malt flavor. Malt and hop are very balanced in this one. A little astringent aftertaste. One of the best "black" IPAs out there. Still drinks more like a traditional IPA with American hops.

Can into a glass. Big tan head on a dark brown body. Medium mouthfeel with a solid roasty aroma, backed with hops. Really smooth with good balance between the hops and malts. A bit of roasted coffee flavor at the finish.

On tap @ the brewery during San Francisco 7/7/14 beer tour. Pours a reddish brown appearance with a light brown head. Light roast, cocoa, coffee, lightly spicy pine in the aroma. A bit thick and a little on the sweet side. A bit of burnt sugar. Bitter liberty hops. Slight chocolate flavor. OK.

On tap pint at Gilly's Beer & Fine Wine in Rockville, MD. Opaque, deep dark brown (sorry, but not black) with creamy khaki head and excellent lacing. Aroma of chocolate, toasted malt, pineapple, toffee and grapefruit. Taste of chocolate, grapefruit, pineapple, toasted malt and caramel. Medium body and medium carbonation with a soft, foamy mouthfeel. A nicely balanced India black ale with enough roastiness to justify the '"black" in its moniker, even if not there in the hue. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Eh, more like Back in Brown but Iíll let it slide just this once. No need to gripe about the color when the flavor and smell is as good as this. The balance between malt and hops is just about perfect for this style. I love that the bitter grapefruit flavor in the hops is nicely offset by the chocolate/coffee flavors in the malt. Chocolate in particular comes out quite nicely. Subtle hints of caramel can also be identified if you look (taste?) hard enough. In the end, the sweetness is what makes this black ale shine. And hell, Back in Black is an awesome name... even if it isnít completely accurate in this case.
