3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jarow (237) - Massachusetts, USA - JUL 28, 2010
Can. Pours a dark brown amber with a big tan head. Nose is hoppy, some medium roasted malts, hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied, decent amount of hoppy bitterness throughout. Sweetness fading to a dry bitter finish with some chocolate, roastiness. The finish is the highlight here - very nice. Otherwise it tastes like a watered down porter with extra hops.

Dark cola pour. Citrus hops and and some ashy roast in the aroma, interplay of the same hops and and coffee. This one stands out in drinkability. I’d have called it at 5.5%. I’m not sure it’s quite the exceptional beer that Deschutes CDA is, but I think I need to try them head to head to properly quantify the gap between them. Oh, it does rock that one can get this cans. I haven’t taken that into account in the score.

12oz can. Pours dark brown with tan head and decent lacing. Hints of coffee and licorice. Didn’t have the usual characteristics of an IPA.

Draft: Dirty bark nose, hints of licorice. Dark brown, thin tan lacing head. Unsweetened cola, charcoal flavor. Orange peel finish. Pleasant mouthfeel. Not bad, but relatively uninspired. Solid ABA suspect Black IPA.

UPDATED: AUG 12, 2010 Sample from a can at the blind IPA tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits. The beer pours a dark brown-black with a medium foamy beige head that dissipates steadily. Sticky rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Medium body with a moderately hoppy and roasty character, plus notes of earthy malt and citrus. The finish is hoppy with a lingering roasted malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Pours a deep dark almost completely opaque black with a thick light beige head. Has good hop a roasted malt aroma. Taste has a hoppy beginning with a deep roasted almost oaky roast finish. Leaves a charred aftertaste on the tongue. Nice easy drinking Black IPA. Another good session offering from 21st Amendment.

Nice light frothy head on the pour. An inch of head and is staying around very nicely. Great lacing on the glass. I smell lots of bread notes, hops mixing in here and there. Lemon/citrus notes in the aroma. Very dark just shy of pitch black. Medium bodied beer I would have to say. Mouth feel is excellent, very smooth on the palate. Fantastic black IPA, try this one!
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 cmonster (897) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUL 25, 2010
Can served in an English pint. This one says 6.5% abv. on the newly canned brew. Pours almost black in color with a huge tan head. Good retention and Alien blood splattered lacing. Head aroma is cocoa, but moves to grassy hops and roastiness as the liquid appears. Light bitter, light sweet flavor. Medium body, good carbonation, thin-oily texture, and a long roasty, moderately bitter finish. Neither too sweet nor too heavy nor nor too bitter. A session CDA.
