COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

I thought this one was pretty good. It seems like a simple concept to me...make a good IPA, plus some dark malt to mellow out the body and finish. You get the aroma and the up front of hops, then a malty smooth finish. I like black IPAs, and this is a good, if not great one.

12oz can. Pours black with a nice floral bitter nose. Iím expecting it to be bitter and the palate follows but the body doesnít hold up as well to the bitterness that I had hoped. Still a great offering decent hop profile, but needed just a little more depth.

Cola colored pour with a big thick frothy tan head. Strong roasted malt aroma, some coffee with nice citrus hop notes. Nicely balanced flavor, the sweetness from the malt and bitterness from the hops meld well. Medium body, enjoyable beer, has the bite of a regular ipa with some added sweetness to mellow it out.

Can. Clear brown pour, light tan head. Nice hoppy/citrus aroma, flavor is more subdued... some bitter hops, roasted malt, citrus, light coffee. Watery mouthfeel. Iím not that impressed.

This poured a dark brown color with a beige head. Aroma was dark roasted malts and fresh citru hops. Flavor was nice layering of roasted and toasted malts with fresh citrus hops and medium bitterness, good but not great.

Can. Ruddy brown more than black. Thin but sudsy head. Sweet malty aroma. Drinks with tangy bite, light in body. Fruit rind dominates. (#3971, 8/28/2010)

can. pours a brown with ruby highlights and a solid off white head which settles to a 1/4" throughout. spicy grassy hops across the nose with some lingering roasted malts... medium body with more bitterness, light caramel malt, light coffee, roasted malts, somewhat thinning sides and a tad bit watery towards the back. there is a off putting aftertaste - canít really place it... almost ashy or old coffee grounds. overall - this is decent, but really falls off at the end - drinkable but not worth buying again.

In theory, black IPAís should be the ultimate beer. In some cases they are quite good. I remember the Stone one kicked ass and the Deschutes one is pretty great. This one isnít bad, but it suffers, like many do, from an acrid bitterness that is almost sour. I feel like a black ipa should have more late hop additions and let the roasty malts come out in body.

This new style of beer is pretty awesome and I hope more breweries start offering it. 21stís version seems a decent example. Blends some of the best from ipa porter styles. This is a deep brown to black beer with a light tan head that went down quickly. The aroma was a grassy hop with some citrus undertones. The bitterness from the hops plus the roastiness of the malt gives a coffee impression very well. Finishes a bit more chocolate. Mouth feel is kind of watery but that might just be what this style is about.

Poured dark brown, roasted malts, grassy hops, caramel, little nutty, little coffee.
