Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

Pours a dark black with copper edges and one to two fingers of creamy light tan head. Nose shows coffee and bakers chocolate with hints of citrus and pine. Flavor is fine, dark chocolate and kind of metallic,. Not very much black or IPA and not too awesome. Palate is weird, kind of slick.

Can pours a dark mahogany body that has some clarity when held to light. Large creamy tan head leaves patches and a collar of nice lacing. Aroma is pine hops and coffee. Medium to light medium on the palate with a slightly creamy carbonation. Lighter body than expected. Taste has a solid dark roasty malt base with notes of bittersweet chocolate and coffee, balanced by pine hop bitterness and a hint of grapefruit rind. This one was a pleasant surprise and is very drinkable.

Can shared by emacgee. Dark brown with a steady white head. Super buttery and sweet nose, some plastic, light hops, phenols. Flavor is metallic, like sucking on a penny. Iíve done it so I know. This is not good.

The fact that I can have this beer in a can, is a wonderful thing. Not the best black IPA (still such a dumb style name for a beer, but...whatever) but itís extremely quaffable. Thereís a good showing of perky grapefruit sitting on top of the roasted malt profile. Some burnt sugar too kind of wafts up. Flavor is very well balanced with the sweetness and roasted notes of the malts and the juicy citrus/pine hop punch. The brewer found a nice way to keep all of these things in harmony. Appearance is pretty much black with some brown/ruby edges and a nice 1/2" creamy head with nice retention.

Draft at Ginger Man in NYC. Pours a dark mahogany brown color and topped by a smooth head of tan colored foam that settles quickly to a thin film. Some nice rings of lace coat the glass. The aroma shows a nice mix of bitter orange peel and resinous pine hops all atop a dry, roasty, dark chocolate malt base. The flavor follows and is very hop forward with the orange peel, grapefruit, and piney hop bitterness and then balanced out by the roasty, dark chocolate and toasted caramel malts. There is a nice fruity element as well that adds a touch of sweetness to balance out the roast and bitterness. Medium bodied with good carbonation that leads to a dry, roasty finish. This was a nice black ipa.

can. dark brown body, medium brown head, below average retention. incredibly dirty black pepper phenols, american hops and butter in the nose. watery body, metallic and solvent-like texture. burnt butter and oil, dirty phenols and an unpleasant oiliness make this perhaps the worst in the style iíve tried so far.

aroma is licorice candy at first, but thereís also a lot of roastyness--even a bit sour--and earthy hops with a bit of metal. dark brown, though light around the edges, with thick billowy beige head. flavor is a bit odd actually, sharply sweet in the middle and bitter in back. a bit thin also, fairly high carbonation, finish is sour and bitter. i donít like this very much, i think itís too much roasted malt, giving it a sour flavor, like over-roasted coffee, and itís also too sweet. all that really muddles any ipa that might be in there.

A: The pour is reminiscent of cola in terms of the color with a dense off-white head and some spots of lacing. S: The nose is primarily of roasted malts and bitter-sweet chocolate. A moderate citrus hop aroma of grapefruit and orange peels. Not quite as hoppy as your usual black IPA. T: The hop character is mild, especially in terms of the bitterness. Fairly sweet and chocolatey with a decent grapefruit flesh and peel flavor, though. M: The body is medium with a moderate to high level of carbonation. D: Not exactly what you think of in terms of the black IPA, but still a good beer.

12 oz can into shaker. Pours black with reddish tints when held up to the light; has a thick, long-retaining rocky bone-white head that leaves some decorative lace. Aroma is fairly subdued. Thereís some citrus powder drink here as well as some freshly baked bread, but itís all a little muted. Becomes more true citrusy rather than the powdered stuff as it warms; more pungent, too (in a good way). Taste is sweet, turns bitter, finishes sour and bitter. Itís a total half and half: that is, half IPA, half porter or stout, which is how I like a good Black IPA to taste like. A bit nutty in flavor. Carbonation is medium to high; body is medium. Great beer.

Can. Black, clear pour with a large, thick light tan head. Nutty aroma with herbal mint, citrus, roasty character. Light, fairly well carbonated body. Has an off, rancid nut and metallic flavor to it that makes this very hard to drink. Thereís some cocoa roastiness and more of that hoppy character to redeem it a bit: citrus, herbal mintiness, a piney bitter finish. Thereís a good beer lurking here, but something about it is off putting to me.
