In can from Max Lagers. Pours stout brown with tan head. Nose is a ton of malt with coffee, bread, aggressive pine and citrus hops, and a bit of earth and slight sweetness. Flavor is similar. Hops with slight chocolate & coffee. It works well! Medium bodied & very good. Slight metal from can.

12 oz can
Purchased as a single for a nominal markup I almost wish I had picked up the four pack instead. This was a solidly made black IPA despite some skepticism when I saw where it was actually brewed. This is at least one positive thing to come from Cold Springs, MN (at least for the Ohio market).
Aroma / Appearance - Ebony black and murky the body lets through only a trace amount of background light. However unlike a porter or imperial stout it doesn’t have an oily texture. Fluid and nimble it dances around the glass like a ballerina on stage. Warm resin, pine cones, and partially melted marshmallows give this a nice depth. Only mildly alcoholic it has a welcome balance.
Flavor / Palate - A hoppy and carbonated blend of 7Up and Coke the fluid mouthfeel is delicate on the tongue. Ashy flakes sit in the throat with a warm bubbly finish. Falling just short of expectations set by the pour it is mostly in the ballpark. Were it a bit cheaper I would probably buy it again soon. Instead I’ll wait to drink through more of the cellar before giving this a revisit.

Shared can thinks to Guardyloo. Pours ruby black brown, off white head. Aroma is malty, tangy, and grassy. Flavor is grassy bitter, malty, and roasted. Not very complex and I detect more if the alcohol than I’d care too.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours a deep, opaque black/ruby color. Nice light brown/tan head on top. Huge pillowy head with an outstanding retention rate, obviously great lacing. Nice hoppy aroma, light resin with some hints of grapefruit. Wonderful roasted malt aroma. Flavor is dead on, but seems to be a bit thin. Very drinkable but the brew is lacking some body.

Can. Dark brown pour with little white head. Aroma is slight citrus hops and roasted malts. Taste is pretty average, mostly roasted malt with some hops. Nothing overwhelmingly interesting going on.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
tap - dark brown pour, citrusy hops. dark roasted caramel malts. touch of piney bitterness. As far as black IPAs go... this one is fairly nondescript.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
9/10/10. 12oz can - thanks, Matt! Black pour, more brown/dark amber when held to the light, with a big fluffy khaki head that lasts and laces a ton. The aroma is fresh citrus hops with a spicy kick and a hint of chocolate. The flavor is more on the porter side with chocolates, a hint of sour, and a dash of metal. A little disappointing compared to the aroma, but not bad!

12oz Can poured almost black. Smells of licorice, hopps, dark malts and a little chocolate. Very Suprising not smokey or toasty at all and not too dark. Very balanced for a dark beer. Great full body with a tan frothy head. Great Beer
