Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

Actually had this beer two weekends in a row not realizing it was the same beer (one bar had abbreviated the name). The beer is very dark black like a schwarzbeir. Lighter/whiter head than I would assume from a beer this dark. The mouthfeel is little watery with a bitter finish. The flavors are a little bit sweet: molasses, caramel, roasted malts but with a hop undertone (I think there is less hops than other rates have commented on). And with both the hops and the malts I just wouldn’t call it balanced. The mouthfeel seemed to just fall off and end.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with slight mahogany edges when held to a light source and a two finger frothy, light beige head. Excellent retention, only slowly fading into a thick lasting cap that coats the glass with rings and splotches of soapy mocha lacing. Earthy hop aroma with hints of pine needle as well as some citrus fruit notes. This is balanced by a slightly smokey, roasted malt presence. Hints of pine, grapefruit and lemon peel countered by chocolate and caramel malt, smoke, burnt toast and roasted coffee bean. Medium bodied with a bitter, earthy hop blast up front that is contered by a roasted, smokey malt flavor mid-palate and a bitter dry finish. The hop presence is prominent with a lot of earthy pine flavor that lingers throughout. The citrus notes from the aroma are faint if there at all resulting in a mostly bitter beer that has a nice malt backbone. The malt presence is more prominent than expected for the style with an acrid, roasted/burnt presence. Hints of roasted coffee bean, burnt toast and oatmeal with hints of sweet chocolate, nut and toffee. This beer is an interesting experiment, but for me, there’s too much of a malt presence for it to be a good hop based beer(IPA, Cascade Dark Ale, Black IPA, American Dark Ale, whatever you want to call it) and too hoppy to be a malt based beer. It’s not bad really just kind of all over the place with it’s flavor profile.

Can. Poured black with ruby hints if held up to the light. fizzy white head, that laced the glass. Aroma was very fruity, grapefruits. Flavor again, fruity. Grapefruit and pines. Full bodied, thick texture. Fizzy carbonation. Bitter, in a good way aftertaste. Warming. Dry.

Again in the can. Pours as black as any stout or porter I would claim to be good. small to medium tan-hued head. Aroma is sweet toffee and toasted malts. The flavor is very well balanced, the hops are sharp with their pine and citrus highlights. The malts are robust and toasty. The body is medium, which fits very nice to the flavor. The only knock I have on this beer.... I swear there is a metallic taste to the beer.... From the can or from my head.... Still a good beer.

On tap. Dark brown in color with a medium off white head. Small citrus hop aroma. Taste is dark chocolate, a hint of soy sauce, some coffee, with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Needs more hop presence other than the bitterness in the finish. Pretty solid, but slightly lacking.
