12oz can. Pours black with medium head. Strong hop aroma. Taste is very hop forward with a ton of simcoe dry hop. Hops linger on the tongue long after the beer is done.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Excellent well rounded brew. Smooth, easy to drink. Cud b a little more hop forward in taste for my opinion. Roasted malty flavor with hop hints and a chocolatey bitter finish

Ok but can was from 7/3/13 and I drank it 3/2014 so probably not at its best. Dark coffee some hops and a little bitter aftertaste. Smelled a little skunky.

Can poured to tall glass at Mustard's in Napa Valley. Noticed the beer was canned on May 20, 2013 and I had it March 5, 2014. Nice restaurants really need to start figuring this beer things out, not really acceptable for an IPA, black or not. Anyway, pours dark brown to black with a little purple hue, small off white head. Smells like lemon pinesol and some sweet chocolate in the background. The flavor follows the aroma rather closely, with much more malt sweetness. Chocolate, lemon, pine, old hops I guess. Medium mouthfeel, a bit creamy, with medium level carbonation. Would like to try fresh but as is it wasn't bad. With that said, plenty of better things to reach for.

Black IPA, true to the burgeoning style. Not to thick, not too thin, decent hop character, but could use more. Mild chocolate middle with a slight coffee, mostly hop bitter finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a translucent brownish black from the can with dissipating off-white head. Aroma is hop forward, piney resins, hint of roast dark malt. Taste follows, less hoppy and more malty, nice balance. Standard black IPA, but nothing crazy.

The dark roasted malts smell and taste good. They balance out the hops quite nicely.
