COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

FROM NOTES: August 7, ’12 On draft at The Yard House, served in a half-yard. A: Light piney hops. Sweet malts. A: Pours a super dark brown, almost black, with a one-finger light tan head that dissipates slowly leaving decent lacing. T: Initially some roasty flavors giving way to a fruit like flavor and some sweetness. Bitterness follows. P: The body is pretty light with low amounts of carbonation and a slightly sticky feel. O: Not nearly as hop-forward as a black ale should be. It seems more like a watered down version of a RIS. Maybe it was the half-yard, but this black left me disappointed.

Draught at the 21:st Amendment in San Fransisco. Brown head. Dark red-brown color. Roasted malt aroma that also dominate the taste with a tuch of caramell. Big bitterness and hop taste. One of the best balck IPA’s I’ve tried. This beer give me hope that there actually are enoyable Black IPA’s.

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2014 (Can) It’s an okay beer. Lots of citrus / grapefruit hop aroma and a long, lingering, astringent, bitter aftertaste. Flavor is okay. There are a lot of bad black IPAs out there; this one is not bad, but it’s also not good either.

Can. Dark cola. Aroma is roasted malt and earthy hops. The taste adds chocolate, coffee grinds, bitter hints of citrus, and dark rich malts. Average to low carb, bitter finish, light body. Damn, this is a great all around black ipa. A little of everything with excellent balance.

12oz can pours dark licorice black with 2 finger offwhite head. Nose is round malty orange and some light roasty ash, bitter cocoa, and dirt. Taste is on the sweeter malt side with some earthy pine and soil, light sweet citrus and lemon, touch of vanilla, nutty coffee bean.Finish is thin, bitter cocoa and evergreen, some fruity citrus. Decent enough attempt but not something I’d revisit.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2014 12oz can pours black with an off white foamy head quick to dissipate but stays as lacing. How Black you ask? Well when put up to light it actually looks red, with plenty carbonation and filtered for sure.Smells of roasted malts but also quite sweet in an odd way. Taste bitter and of roasted malts, has an unfortunate alcohol sweetness to it. Prevalent carbonation in mouth-feel and leaves an almost ashy malty bitter aftertaste.

"i don’t know if 21st is having quality control issues or what, but this is the second straight beer that had a sour/tangy/metallic quality that didn’t belong, and it became more pronounced as the beer warmed. without this it would be a decent black ipa, though the roasted malts kinda overpower the hops. it looks nice enough at a murky brown with a thick khaki head, but damn, that sour thing hampers the aroma, and nearly ruins the feel and flavor. i’m gonna stop bothering with their stuff soon. monks blood is the only standout in the bunch. 11/2012 - again, i haven’t spent money on these guys in a while as i had a couple straight spoiled brews, but again, as expected, this is pretty dang good when made right. good dark malt/chocolate and hop balance. Unfortunately, the range is 2.7-3.7...so it gets a 3.2 for now."

(Rating #5789)
