3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12 oz. can served in a FFF Teku glass. Canned on 04/24/12. Thanks to danielnovak3 for the extra.
A: Pours a solid black color with some dark ruby edges. A light tan head forms on the pour and recedes to a nice bubble collar. It leaves some splotchy sheets of lace behind.
S: Some stale coffee, a little acrid in nature, with some dark chocolate malts and a little piney bite to it.
T: Some roasted malts with a bitter, hoppy bite to it. The finish is some stale coffee with some pale malts.
M: Medium bodied with a bitter, acrid bite to it. A little sharp with some medium carbonation.
O: This just tastes old. The hops have faded, the malt feel a bit plain and the coffee notes are stale.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black clean looking with some surface foam, leaving really no lace. Smells of sweet leather, tobacco and some smoky malts. Some sharp hops in there as well. Medium bitterness and good dry malt flavor with nuts and toast. Some slight piny, resiny hops. The body is medium with moderate carb. The finsh is surprisingly wet compared to others in the style Iíve tried. Decent enough beer, drinkable over and over. Easy to approach.

Something a little different, but really surprised by the combo..kind of a cross between an ipa and a porter..the dark malts really pair well with the hops, yielding a bitter, then dry/malt finish..good job 21st..

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Can @ Beer Temple. Black color with a deep dark red glare coming through when held into the light. Full sized off-white to beige head that lasts for a long time and leaves good lacing. Aroma is quite hoppy. Taste malts, roasted malts, hops, lightly coffee, bitter, lightly fruity even. Medium body and carbonation. Very nice!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Can- poured into a pint pilsner glass, medium bodied 2 finger head that dissipated to leave fine lace
Aroma: dark malt, caramel, light roasted coffee, hops- not obtuse, herbal with a slight bitter scents
Appearance: as above, medium dark caramel color
Taste: up front burnt caramel that dissipates to leave bitter, pleasant citrus hop flavor slight alcohol in the back of the throat, lasting finish of hops
Palate: medium thick, full bodied, rolls nicely over the tongue finishing in the back of the throat ,warming and inviting to another sample
Overall: my first rating...I tried this style to see if a black IPA could deliver the promise of being dark enough to satisfy the oatmeal sweetness of an oatmeal stout, and the bitterness of an IPA in the same brew...overall delivers on a partial promise, while nicely balanced, this brew did not satisfy the stout I expected but exceeded my expectations on the hoppy bitterness I would expect from a true IPA. Overall a nice concept but not yet fully developed...I would recommend this beer as a transition from fall to winter.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This is an IPA that tried to be a Porter. It just couldn't break away from its hoppy-ness! Had this on tap in San Francisco. One of the best black IPAs I've had. Great hoppy bitterness with a hint of the nutty taste of the darker malt.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
FROM NOTES: August 7, í12
On draft at The Yard House, served in a half-yard.
A: Light piney hops. Sweet malts.
A: Pours a super dark brown, almost black, with a one-finger light tan head that dissipates slowly leaving decent lacing.
T: Initially some roasty flavors giving way to a fruit like flavor and some sweetness. Bitterness follows.
P: The body is pretty light with low amounts of carbonation and a slightly sticky feel.
O: Not nearly as hop-forward as a black ale should be. It seems more like a watered down version of a RIS. Maybe it was the half-yard, but this black left me disappointed.
