I love "tasty-crack cans," yet I was a bit disappointed by this beer. After trying Back in Black and Bitter American I had high expectations for a clean, hop-forward beer that weren’t really met. It starts out great with a beautiful brilliant brass-colored body and lots of foam. Aroma is lightly pineapple-y but dominated more by malt than anything else. And flavor is similar, malt forward with hops playing a supporting role. Maybe my example was a touch old, but I would think the can packaging would extend the shelf life of this beer quite a bit. Still, I didn’t really think the prominence of malt in this beer was appropriate for an American IPA nor to my taste. Mouthfeel was pretty good. Not bad, just not what I was expecting.

12oz bottle pours a clear amber with a large white head. Aroma of smells piney with maybe a caramel malt? Regardless it definitely smells like a well balanced IPA. Lightly piney hops balance against what taste like a peanut flavored malt to me. Well balanced, nice carbonated and creamy mouth-feel, this brew is certainly not offensive.

Canned. Pours a clear golden color with a big pillowy beige/orange-tinged head. Aroma is big grapefruit, pine, orange, very slight dankness, very mild maltiness. Flavor is crisp, refreshing, big grapefruit hop character, a distinct malt backbone sweetness. Very nice. Long bitter finish. There’s a mildly foamy mouthfeel that really adds a nice element. Not the most exceptional IPA but it’s really pleasant.

"a solid enough beer with a somewhat aggressive hop nose with a delicate balance. more malt than usual for an ipa. body and look are average. flavor is full, but lacking in complexity. better than average beer, average for an ipa."

(Rating #5787)

Poured a slightly hazy golden from the can. Thin foamy head dies fast, but clings to the glass. First nose was strong with an immediate raw hop out front. Light syrupy citrus with a piney finish that lingers bitterly. Good overall IPA form.

On tap at Mellow Mushroom in Asheville. Pours a somewhat hazy yellow/orange with a nice looking thick white head. About right for style. Haziness/ cloudiness not enough to be off putting. Nose is tons of citrus and pine. Grapefruit and tangerine dominate. Taste follows- nice resiny notes and balance. Bit of dankness in there for good measure. Medium/ creamy mouthfeel. Finish is appropriately bitter- very drinkable. Solid brew if nothing outstanding.

Nice citrus grapefruit aroma and flavor with some pine in there as well. Bitter piney finish. Maybe slight light palate. Gets more towards the piney side the more I drink. Pretty good ipa, but not top notch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from a can dated - 12/13/2013 - pretty old. Aroma - old piney aroma. Pretty good considering the age of the can. Impressed. Appearance - Golden color with a big finger of white fluffy creamy head. Taste - Has held up very well considering the age. PIney, mild - very easy. Palate - Nice lingering taste. Overall - this beer holds up very well over time...very impressed.
