Draft. Very dark brownish maroon, brown head. Aroma of dark roasted coffee, burnt chocolate. Taste of espresso pot left on the burner for too long, rich with a smoky edge. Very nice.

On tap at the brewery. Terrific smoked nose on this one. Sweet and smoky with molasses and coffee. Meaty. Very nice nose. Dark brown-black clear with medium carbonation and light alcoholic warming. Starts with a ton of smoked malt, coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Carbonic gassy acidity with roasted bitter malt, light sweetness, with medium hop bitterness under the smoke. Light in the finish. Nice profile but it’s a little unbalanced at the end - a bit harsh in its bitterness.

Dark brown with a medium head and thick lace. Aromas of chocolate and coffee, a hint of smoke. The flavor is fantastic. A very smooth and balanced bitterness. More coffee flavor and lots of smoke in the finish. The smoke lingers on the palate for a while. Thirst quenching. I love it!

Black with a small fizzy white head. Dark roasted almost burnt coffee aroma and taste. Very mild smoke notes, but a rich malty grain taste and a reasonably creamy palate.

On tap at Toronado. Pours black with a thin tan head and a strong treacle and smoke aroma. The smoky malt flavor is anything but subtle, however it complements the hop bitterness quite well resulting in a fine brew.

Pours red black with a thin cappuccino head. Smell is of course smokey with underlying sugars. Tastes much the same, with some vanilla and caramel.

Draught at the brewpub. This batch is 8.5%abv and reeks of smoke. I like that. Its classification as a smoked instead of a porter should have been a good indication. Like a black rauchbier. There is some roasted malt in the aroma, but pungent smoke runs the show. Chocolatey smoke flavor with a chary earthiness and a dry, roasted finish. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. It’s refreshing to find a smoked porter that has more than a hint of smoke in it. It almost had too much actually, though I do love it.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark, almost black, with a medium tan head. Nose was heavy with smoke, roasted malt and as it warmed up bittersweet chocolate. Taste was smoky malt, dry to the finish. This was a very pleasant suprise on our visit.

GABF 2008 - One of the first beers of the evening. Strong smokey nose, with some toffee and chocolate. Quite roasty with some of the smoke blowing off in the nose, and not carrying across terribly strong on the palate. Comes across very dry but still quite smooth, smokiness changes to gaminess in the finish. Nicely done.

Tasted at GABF 2008. Dark brown with tan head. Smoke, chocolate, nuts and roastiness. Flavor is sweet, with smoke, wood and coffee.
