COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like FDR’s Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 4/10   PALATE 2/5   OVERALL 10/20
Guerde (1164) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - DEC 9, 2010
UPDATED: DEC 11, 2010 (can from bhensonb, thanks!) Pours a dark reddish brown with a light cream-colored head that sticks around well. Aroma of pumpkin, nutmeg, and cinnamon with some gingerbread cookies as well. Pretty dry and spicy, with some subtle sour undertones beneath the dominant dry and spicy elements. Oddly interesting, and it vaguely resembles a flanders red. Taste is lightly sour, with plum skin, cinnamon, some caramel, and gingerbread cookies. The finish is overly spicy and is so dry that it leaves an effect that is reminiscent of the taste you perceive after vomiting or chewing an aspirin. Not that appealing. As the bile and pills fade, there is some saving grace when a light pumpkin-esque finish arrives, but it arrives far too late. Gets more tolerable and toned down as it warms. Overall, this is a pretty weird beer that is just far too spicy and possibly infected.

bu11zeye (11940) - Frisco (Dallas), Texas, USA - DEC 9, 2010
(12oz can, courtesy of ericandersnavy) Pours a clear amber body with a small off-white head. Aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, sweat, caramel, allspice, roasted malt, and burnt bread. Flavor of cinnamon, roasted malt, nutmeg, caramel, brown sugar, and earthiness with a dry finish.

12 oz can served in a tulip. Pour is deep brown with 3 fingers of foam that went the distance and left a pretty show on the glass. Nose is toffee, malt, nutmeg, ginger, and a lightly astringent alcohol. Taste is right on par, but the brew takes more of a dominant vegetable/spice tangent. This rolls right into the finish. On first glance, I really thought this beer had unjustly low ratings. However, the longer I sit with this one, the less the enjoyment factor is and the more I understand it. It is worth a try, but I wouldn’t grab another.

12 oz can shared by Dansting. Pour is a hazed ruby brown with a smallish light tan head. Aroma of not much, some light nut, along with dusty spices and a very faint mild cherry fruitiness. Taste is the mild cherry malt (a bit unnatural), moving in with a nutty roast behind that and then the spicy dusty earthiness. Palate is medium, a bit of a sharp after taste. Just ok - thanks for sharing Dan.

Fratto (2616) - Arlington, Texas, USA - DEC 8, 2010
Can from ericandersnavy. Brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma is sweat and must. Taste is astringent, tart sourness, more locker room tastes, and just not very good. Could be a couple tenths of a point higher if not for Nellie.

CaptainCougar (7129) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - DEC 6, 2010
12oz can: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Has a lightly sweet toasty caramel nose with some off-putting oaky sour cherry notes. Starts with decent fullness and light caramel malty sweetness with some light cinnamon spice and tart fruitiness before an astringently bitter finish. Seems infected and doesn’t really match the description.

Thanks to Ericandersnavy for this one. This beer pours a deep brown with a thin white head. The rinse are dirty clothes hamper, cinnamon, other spices. The mouthfeel is slightly sticky and bitter with a spiciness. Cheers!

joshwilfong (1200) - Cleveland, Ohio, USA - DEC 6, 2010
medium brown with large white head. some mild malt to the nose. a ton of bitterness, very surprising for the style, followed by munich malt and maybe medium crystal malt. the hop flavor is rather low before some yeast esters and a very dry finish. not much spice coming through in this beer that is marked by it’s bitterness and otherwise not overly flavorful

Tap. This beer is infected, but at least when I had it, it seems to actually work pretty well. Sweet tart nose, with toffee, dark fruit and cherries. The taste is fairly dry, light tart cherry, some cinnamon, light toffee, a touch of cola and a tad spicy in the finish.

Brown almost black with a red hue and off-white lacing. Light nose with notes of coffee and cedar. Medium bodied palate with smokey notes. Not the greatest cold weather beer but it will get the job done.
