Like FDRís Depression-Era Radio Addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, our Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. We begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale and then we improvise with spices until we know we have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Celebrating the right to be original.

Very original indeed. A unique and distinct blend of spices and flavor. It strangely reminds me of the winter holiday season, both in smell and taste. But, just like FDR running for four terms in office, I canít help but feel this beer goes just a little too far.

12 oz can into a chilled tall glass. Served with pork and mushroom gravy on a cold rainy night. Another tasty seasonal offering from 21st Amendment. Dark, malty, not too spicy, and enough hops to balance - a perfect beer for the longer nights of winter. Clocking in at 7.9% ABV, this is definitely NOT a session beer. Rather, this ale pairs well with hearty dishes like beef stew, pork chops, and mashed potatoes. A couple of these cans will keep the holidays very cheery.

Can to snifter. Appearance is Deep dark reddish brown, like mahogany. Big creamy head, off white. Aroma is clove, nutmeg, orange, roasted chestnuts, honey, Brown sugar. Taste is honey, fig, date, raisin, pecans. Like a liquid mincemeat pie. Delicious. Low carbonation, but creamy and smooth. Quickly becoming one of my holiday favorites. Weíll see how it fares in the upcoming blind holiday beer tasting. I can almost hear FDR on the radio.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aromas of hops. Taste of hops and some spice. Not bad but nothing special.

Bullshit political comments aside (FDR had nothing to do with this beer... and regardless he was wayyy better than anyone who has been president since -- just sayin), this is a boring and uninspired holiday beer from a brewery that is hit or miss. Tastes like itís trying to be Great Lakes Christmas or Avery Jubilation... but fails in both. The body is too thin, the spices stale. If Santa left this under my tree, Iíd punch him in the neck.

355ml can. Hearkening back to a terrible president and terrible era of the US. Why? Aroma is hops, brown sugar, and some pumpkin pie. Tastes liek a rubbermaid full of christmas things, tastes christmassy ill give em that.

Can from Winco. A pretty solid brew, Iím sensing an English ale under the spice bouquet. Cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla all present, as accents, not overdone. Solid malt body carries it well. Body a bit thin, lets see where this goes with a little warmth.

A can thatís been in my beer cellar since last winter. Clear copper dark brown with a foamy white head. Cinnamon and some clove in the nose. Mildly bitter with a little wood and a little alcohol in the mouth. Medium body and a little alcoholic finish.

12 oz. cans poured to wine glass samplers at Binnyís of Glen Ellyn, IL. California Love Tasting, showing a clear, mahogany hue, with a frothy layer of tan head foam, and wavy cling to the lacing. The nose was toasted with a bit of sweetness and two of my favorite spices when I make pancakes or French toast, namely cinnamon & nutmeg. Medium bodied, with fair carbonation, the taste was similar, with no noticeable cocoa, unless it participated slightly in the toasted sweetness. Included was a moderate, lingering, earthy bitterness. Kind of a lightly spiced Brown Ale, with pleasant drinkability.

Deep red brown color with a huge puffy head. Looks like an amber or a light-colored brown. Or a root beer float. The aroma is sugary, with lots of wintry spices: cinnamon & sage. Brown sugar and dried leaves. Touch of hazelnut and almond. The taste is brown sugar, cinnamon, and molasses. Itís sweeter than I remember. The nuttiness is a distant second to the sweetness. The feel is slick and soft; a bit pillowy. This is not my favorite 21st Amendment brew, but itís appropriate for the season. Iíll bet it would be welcome among non-beer drinkers who donít like the bitterness.
