The story starts in 1999 when Shaun O’Sullivan walked into my Seattle pub. He’d heard about my massive pumpkin fest and wanted to get together and brew a pumpkin beer like no other: a Baltic-style Porter brewed with pumpkin, caraway and cinnamon. In a light colored can.

12oz can pours a brownish black color with a medium fluffy khaki head that leaves light lacing Smells of chocolate, pumpkin, cinnamon, caraway, nutmeg and roasted malt. Tastes of the same things in the smell with a decent hop bite for a porter. Mouthfeel is slick and watery but creamy with decent carbonation. Pretty good pumpkin porter. pretty unique compared to most out there. A lot of favors going on in this beer going to save my other can for a while and see how it tastes with a little age.

Draft pour at Special Brews. Pours near black with a pumpkin spice aroma. Spice flavor with some pumpkin and light coffee. Interesting beer here. I’m definitely enjoying this.

Can: Toast and pumpkin nose, bready. Mahogany, thick tan head. Lightly sweet coffee, pumpkin, and cinnamon. Nicely done. Definitely baltic porter first with enough pumpkin and spice to make it interesting.

Decent nose but weaker than the flavor, which mixes the good parts of a big chewy yet smooth Baltic porter body and flavors of dark fruit, cocoa and light toasted malts with pumpkin spices. I think the tripel is the better beer but this satisfies my pumpkin rumblings for now..."

Can. Lesson learned ... read the label. I had no idea this had pumpkin in it until the instant I took a whiff of this muddy, black brew. I sense a strong vegetal thing, THEN I read the label ... and ... OH! Pumpkin! I’m not a fan of pumpkin or any other squash in beer, sorry. This one doesn’t change my mind. All I saw was "baltic porter" and got excited. The first taste ruins it even more. The vegetal aspect comes across more like zucchini, quite green, and wet. What little porter character there is in this one is buried well below that initial over-cooked squash sense. (#5620, 8/12/2014)

A quite interesting Baltic porter. Pours a beautiful thick black with a creamy tan head. Smells of pumpkin and herbs. Taste starts off very creamy, with some pumpkin and sweetness, but not overly so. The ending is very different. The creaminess disappears and is replaced by just a bit of bitter hops. Very two-faced. Had in the can.

Can:   Deep brown, fairly nice head and lacing.   Somewhat of a non-sweet spiced nose, caraway, squash, and pumpkin.   Faint hint of cinnamon as it warms.   A little chalky and dry on the tongue, along with the aforementioned spices.   Could use a little more sweetness.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   A little dry and chalky on the finish, soft roast, maybe even a little bit of astringency.   The spices are there, but not of the sweet variety.

Thick dark pour. Very full mouth feel with lots of malt and caramel flavor. Can’t say I tasted much pumpkin

Bamber Jolly day 2 25/01/2014. Tasting at Cafe Abseits. Big thanks to Colin. Clear caramel coloured pour with a thin off white head. Aroma is soft earthy roast, sweet caramel, vegetable. Flavour is sweet, nutty malts, with caramel, soft roast. Palate is sticky and sweet. . Not great overall, some nice coffee.

Wow, this is a lively one! One of the most dynamic aromas I’ve come across. You can almost taste the beer through smell with all the spicy notes jumping out. It has a very nice dark brown pour w/ a good tan head that leaves rings of lacing. The flavor has too much going on for me. It’s a lot like Peste but all jumbled together and not all that balanced. It definitely scores point for its uniqueness but it doesn’t quite all come together for me!

Would re-class this as a Spice beer IMHO. Pours near black with red hues. Not dense, just very dark. Large head and good lacing. Huge spices on the nose, mostly pumpkin. Solid, lasting roasty flavor that, along with the spices, linger on the finish for a long time.
